Sounds like a bad idea... How about you find a 3120 and play through it first?ashlandcheddars wrote:my 6505 head has the bias mod and silver mica mod, and all new ruby output and assorted 3 shunguag, 1 JJ, and a 1 NOS chinese preamp tubes, it was jsut service.. i am looking for a peavey 3120 head in good shape.. i love the 6505 but im wanting to try something different and what ive heard of the 3120 its what i want.. i will be putting up pictures 2morrow.. also if interested please pm me with pictures.. lmk thanks

i have plugged it in, thats what from what ive heard means... to me the 3120 is so much more tighter, has more usable gain.. and i jsut like the tone of it better.. I really like the ultra plus the best.. which the 3120 and ultra plus are basically the same concept... the 6505 is just to woofy sounding.. i like it, but i am jsut having a hard time dialing it in to the tone i REALLY like.. plus im not into play really metalcore deathcore brutal stuff anymore, playing more southern metal time of stuff, which the 6505 still does it well but i need more of a clean now... honestly i just want a 3120 or ultra plus..

If you're willing to deal with the aesthetics of the Triple XXX,(of which can be easily modded of course) it's basically identical to the 3120 tonally and it's precursor. They are cheaper and more easily found out on the used market. Ebay, Craiglist and some notable guitar forums are some of the best places to find a deal on one if you're patient.
While I have a great appreciation for the 5150/6505 series amps, they are limited in ways IMHO and in certain tones, namely with clean sounds. Hopefully the Ultra series lineage of Peavey amps will be more to your liking and are certainly more flexible. The Ultra Plus and 3120 are great amps and will certainly serve you well for a wide variety of styles and still excel for metal tones. Good luck in your search man!
