problem with early eighties renown solo series

Post by Les Talint » Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:14 am

Just before one of the fuses blew, out of no where the amp was humming violently. as i have to wait to replace the fuse, i was wondering if this sounds familiar and if the amp is burned. I worry the fuse wont be the actual solution

Like has a blown Output transistor or short in the power supply caused by a bad either output transistor or driver. Also check the speaker and verify it is ok as that will cause hum and blown fuses also.

I'm not familiar with this amp, but if it has tubes, pull them, then change the fuse (simply as a troubleshooting procedure). If the amp fires up and the fuse doesn't blow, you can pretty much count on a bad tube causing the problem.

No tubes, SS amp and OP if you put a new fuse in it I can almost guarantee you it will blow again however it would be wise to disconnect the speaker before trying again. If it blow without a speaker connected I'd be willing to bet the output transistors are gone as are the rectifiers in the power supply.
