VK112 stoped working
VK112 stoped working
I was playing my Valveking 112, then a pop sound and no volume. Lights on, fuse is fine, tubes don't look out of the ordinary, replaced em all with spares, but when I try to play the guitar nothing, high or low gain input. I think the speaker is fine because when I cut the gain all the way up and hit the boost I still hear that normal faint hum. Any ideas what it might be, I have the warranty and will give peavey a call tomorrow.

Yeah I should have know it wouldn't be an easy fix, and to open that up would void the warranty wouldn't it.

Re: VK112 stoped working
Messed around with it a little more, I can get a faint sound with volume, gain, high gain input, volume boost, and boost on. That should get the neighbors calling but I can hardly hear it. I took the amp out to ohm out the fuses, only saw three that were visable, and they all ohmed out fine, put it back together and I'm going to be calling peavey as soon as the lines are open in the morning.

Make sure the input to the reverb tank are plugged in solid, too...

Re: VK112 stoped working
I'd mostly suspect a cracked / bad / cold solder joint. Visually inspecting the board will usually find these - but first try to narrow it down...
Use the FX loop to test if the preamp and power amp sections work as follows;
Plug FX Send into another amp's input, plug your guitar into the VK and see if the preamp works
Plug an MP3 player, mixing board, or guitar into a distortion/boost pedal cranked way up into the FX Return to see if the PA section works
Also, check the connector to the output transformer, that's been known to get corroded and noisy (but it's a long shot)
Bad power supply diodes have occurred too but "usually" they short and take out a fuse.
Make sure all the tube filaments are glowing, even if you replaced them all there could be a clue if some or all are not. Turning off the room lights will help, some 12AX7s are very dim
It might also be the channel switching mute triac and/or FET but if it's under warranty let a Peavey shop dig in for that. If the PA section works and the preamp section is extremely feeble, this is a possibility...

Re: VK112 stoped working
Weak solder joint around the input jacks seem to be a recurring theme with the VK. If you still have a warranty, definitely use it.

My local music store is awesome, I called them and told them the problem, and they are going to switch me out with a new one, so problem solved.

Re: VK112 stoped working
I'm up and running again, took a closer look before we made the exchange, did some of what 65 SG suggested, think it was probably the solder point on the input jack or something along those lines. But whatever it was is history now hopefully this one was put together a little more solid and I get plenty of years out of it. Guy at the store said some of these things are built like bricks, one of his band members dropped his down a flight of stairs and it came out without a scratch.
