Older Bandit 112 vs Special 112 solo series

Post by Renown » Thu Jun 07, 2012 11:56 am

Is there any differences in these amps. I am looking for a bandit 112 loaded with a scorpion but all i found so far is the special 112 with scorpion. the control panel looks the same are there any differences in these amps? I am talking about the early to mid 90's amps...

The one I currently own is an '89, has the Scorpion driver, and is badged as

Solo Series
Bandit 112

So it's a Solo, and it's a Bandit. :? And it's a powerhouse. And I love it.

I do amp mods and repairs and played through scads of these back when they were (probably) the most common working mans' guitar amp in the US - so when I got this one, I dug around for historical info, schematics etc. on this family of amps and from what I've learned, there are only minor differences in circuitry and tone stack naming / arrangement - the overall chassis design can be considered as basically the same. There were a few seemingly scarce "transitional" models and (and I am by no means an expert in Peavey history) but in general, they are all great amps when understood and dialed in properly.

I'm sure others will chime in...these are still way popular amps

Keep looking, you'll find one. Mine was a CL find, I paid $65 so there are still deals to be had.

Check out this great history rundown http://forums.peavey.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=14177

If you find a Special 112 from the same era as the Bandit 112 you want (that is, they look the same), they are the same amp except for a power difference. Same knobs, same features, just twice the power in the Special and therefore it weighs more.

So if you don't mind the extra weight, it won't matter if you get the Bandit or Special 112. The big difference is with later models. The Special became a 212 with more features than it's Bandit counterpart. And the last 2 Bandit models (at least) have had no comparable Special, since they were discontinued.

Good luck with your search.
