Anyone have a 6505 with EL34's and also does anyone know what this circuit it was based off . I know it was started with a plexi design its obvious but can anyone confirm it ? what are your thoughts on the difference with El34's . Is my assumption correct ?

thanks
I don't think the circuit was based off of a Plexi circuit at all. I think Eddie was looking to take his tone in a different direction. Before you go converting the 6505 to EL 34, have you considered trying a 6534? The claim is they have an improved noise levels and clean channel with the EL34 bark.

I prefer EL34 over any other power tube, but Peavey makes the crunchiest 6L6 based amps I've come across.

Yeah the 5150/6505 circuit was based off the Soldano SLO, like many other popular amps.
The amps voicing is largely due in part to the preamp. So simply swapping output tubes will not make one amp sound more like another.

If you were to hit the front end of your 800 with a boost pedal, I would suspect you might then put the 6505 in the closet. This is a common and extremely effective method used by 800 owners over the years to get more modern levels of gain and pick attack/response. It's a Holy Grail tone in the metal world.
I do agree that the 6505 rhthym channel is 800esque, but the voicing is different. More low mids, less upper mids. Also, it's inherently thicker and obviouisly has more gain on tap.

I had the question a while back for my 6505 too. To convert from 6L6 to EL34. Overall I do love that Marshall and EL34 tone a little more then 6L6. But check this thread out. Enzo answered it pretty well.

Also Bonanz, I read somewhere a while ago that using a 5881 power tube with more than 400v running thru it can cause some probs. I could be wrong but definitely look into it to be sure. The 6505 runs at 500 plate volts.

Yeah, the Peavey 6505 is son of a Soldano which is son of a JCM 800 which is son of the Plexi which is son of the Fender Bassman which is son of any "hifi" amp from the 40s.
It´s not about stealing from schematics, for me it is called evolution of guitar sound.
From the 40s on nothing really new has been invented for guitar amps. That´s a good thing.
All those people - Leo Fender, Jim Marshall, Mike Soldano and the good people from Peavey - were part of the evolution for making guitar amps sound better, fatter, bigger and more awesome they just added something here and cut something there and tweaked the circuit.

Thanks guys keep the world rockin´,
RIP Leo and Jim
