Hi everyone,
I am trying to find out the correct information on the always-confusing topic of matching cabs and heads. I don't know why this ohms thing always confuses me...
I am interested in buying a 2nd hand Supreme XL (SS, with tribal graphics, I think you know the one?) I had a good look at the owner's manual, and I noted that it has two outputs and says that the amplifier requires an 8 ohm cabinet.
My 4 x 12 cabinet has two inputs, and has a switch to run the cab either stereo or mono. When set to "mono", the cab is labelled 4 ohms and one would plug the amplifier into the cab's input labelled "input".
When the cab switch is set to "stereo", it is labelled as 8 ohms and one would plug two amplifier leads into the two stereo inputs on the cab.
Would I use the two outputs on the Supreme XL head into the two stereo inputs on my cabinet set to 8 ohms?
Holy - that looks confusing to read!
I hope I have been clear, any help or advice would be appreciated.

Re: Peavey Supreme XL Ohms/Cabinet Question
Double check manual to see if XL Head equipped with Ohm Selector Switch (16/8/4).

Re: Peavey Supreme XL Ohms/Cabinet Question
Thanks for the quick reply,
There is no ohms switch mentioned in the manual. It has an power output switch (25, 50, 100), three damping options, but no ohms switch.
However, it does say on the back of the amp: 100 watts into 8 ohms, 80 watts into 16 ohms.
It also mentions in the Peavey manual that "it is preferable to use both outputs to maintain proper gain structuring."

Re: Peavey Supreme XL Ohms/Cabinet Question
Owner's Manual shows amp not equipped with Ohm Selector Switch.
Supreme XL provides 80 Watts @ 16 Ohm / 100 Watts @ 8 Ohms
Minimum Load 8 Ohms
Do NOT Use 4 Ohm Cab Setting
Use two speaker cables allowing amp to run @ 8 Ohms

Re: Peavey Supreme XL Ohms/Cabinet Question
Thank you!
That seems to be the solution. Using both outputs on the head is what Peavey suggests, and the cabinet runs at 8ohms in stereo so it appears to be an ideal solution.
Thanks again for your advice and knowledge.

Re: Peavey Supreme XL Ohms/Cabinet Question
Just another thought...
If I am using both outputs on the amplifier, does that mean the Supreme will put out 50 watts per side or 100 watts per side?
If my cabinet is rated at 100watts (I think it is - will have to check the owner's pamphlet) as opposed to 200 watts, should I set the power switch on the Supreme at 50%? Or would 100% be OK?
I would assume the total output of the two outputs would be 100 watts...
So many questions.

Thank you Classic30inCincy,
It's nice to have such an informed player available to bounce ideas across.
I will write back when I get this head and give my impressions.
