Is the xxx II head a worthy modern metal amp? I am interested in purchasing one and dont want to resort to the 6505 series because too many people use them. Can a beasty tone be created on this amp?

What kind of metal do you play ? The jsx and xxx 2 have a lot of mid.The 3120 is the old xxx and is great amp for metal. If you play a lot drop tunings like c or b the 6505 is the way to go.

What I play is heavy rock boredering on metal in drop c. Theres a lot of alternative rock to what we play. So I love the versitility of the xxx 2.

Also would swapping out the el34s make the xxx 2 better for heavy rock or metal?

I have been rolling amps for most of this year (GC has a great return policy), and just picked up another JSX (same thing as XXX II). It just has a tightness to it that I cannot find anywhere else. It does not do the fuzzy scooped 5150 tone that well, but it does everything else better. The Ultra channel has more than enough bite, and if EQ'ed right, can be as brutal as you need it. Add a boost in front, and it will saturate and chunk with the best of them. I think it really comes down to what you play, and how you play it. For less articulate styles, the 5150 series may be better, because the mids are more "bland", and can cover some sloppyness suring faast pick attack or cross picking, that the JSX/XXX2 will excentuate more. The 5150 also has a more iconic grindcore type distortion, especially at low tunings, where the JSX is more "hair" metal if not EQ'ed right.

EL34s give it a more Marshall tone, where the mids have more bite and the lows are less defined, compared to 6L6s. But you can get anywhere in between with KT77s.

Do ducks fly south for the winter?

Get one! You won't regret it! 8) It is effectively the former JSX in "new clothes". As already stated, with some tweaking and a good boost pedal and/or a EQ in the loop, it will hang with the best of the metal amps out there IMHO.
