Transtube Special 212

Post by vforever » Fri Mar 25, 2016 9:40 pm

Hey folks,

I absolutely love the Transtube amps, and it's cool when I find a "new" one while scrounging around. I've spotted a TT Special 212--probably circa 2004 with the pointy logo. (Which I prefer.) Anyone have one of this vintage or thereabouts? I've heard a couple of demos, and it sounds decent.

Edit: I believe these came with 2 x Sheff 1230s. True?

Negative. It's the USA made 130 Watter from about a dozen years ago. It's a red stripe with pointy logo.

Update: Wait, I'm sorry....this amp is known as the 'Peavey (Transtube) Special II'. Is this link okay? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifie ... itar-combo (Outside website]

Start with a red stripe Bandit, add another speaker, add 50 Watts, and add an Ultra channel. Boom, Special 212!

If you like the red stripe Bandit, and sometimes wish you had just a little bit more, you'll probably dig it.

The II means second generation Transtube. There is a silver stripe Special 212 that came before it, and it has first generation TT.

I'd like to have one of these. I saw one at my nearest guitar center not too long ago. It was a little rough looking for the pric they had on it so I didn't get it. If I could find one in nice shape at a good price I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if I could.

I read as far as "Start with a red stripe Bandit...", and I said, "Sold!" :)

Thanks for the replies, gents.

I had one of these in the late 90s. I don't think it was a red stripe, but it was surely just a previous generation.

I liked the amp, but it lacked some dynamics, and low end, but it was balanced. The tone was nice. I gigged and rehearsed regularly with it, and it was Peavey durable.

If this is what you've been looking for, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Congrats

. It's super loud and I can get good tones from all three channels. Just takes some tweaking. I keep trying to sell it but no one wants them out here in San Francisco Bay Area.

Made in USA pointy logo red stripe Special 212. I almost forgot how challenging it is to dial these amps in. It came with no speakers, I installed a pair of 8 ohm Sheffield 1230's, so that bumped the wattage up.This amp is so loud that the panel the speakers attach to vibrates violently. That's when I realized the cabinet on this amp is quite inadequate for what I'm trying to accomplish, which is an incredibly loud 2x12 combo. And these amps are already stupid loud. So this will be a fun project making a cab worthy of this monster. Some higher powered speakers will probably be necessary because the goal here is to have a stand alone amp. Does anybody have a speaker recommendation that sounds similar to the 1230's and can withstand some power and volume?

Hey all. Thanks for sharing all this information in the thread.

Well, I plugged it in tonight and immediately was unhappy...because those Sheffield 1230s sound so much better than the Blue Marvels in my other combo. :( Heh, I'm never happy.

Seriously though, great amp!

Edit: Mmm, maybe spoke too soon. While the TT EFX combo with its Blue Marvels has a little too much "blare" in the midrange, it definitely works well with the darker sound of this amp.

WANTED: Peavey Special 212 UK. If anyone has one or knows anyone that has, please message me. Cheers.
It's the older version (spikey logo)I'm looking for, not the newer one. Love these amps .....
