QW4

Post by Jack Keaton » Tue Jan 10, 2012 8:31 pm

Just wanted to say sorry to my neighbors!

I bought some used QW4f's a few months ago (400$ each) finally got all the amps and got a anvil rack 12 space (100$ off Craig's list, I asked the guy if he was sure he wanted to sell it that cheap because I felt like I was ripping him off) Anyways I wired up the rack panel, hooked up the amps, powered up and all I can say is OMG these things will knock your socks off. I hit them in full range first, off a cs 4080 no vsx hooked up. I didn't think I would get much low end, I was so wrong, I could feel the bass and I wasnt even pushing them that hard.
Next hooked up the vsx ran them in with BI AMP presets cs1400 and cs 4080. Seriously these speakers are LOUD, VSX and bi-amp setup is crazy. Lastly I ran them in the QW4 over a sub presets which is how I intend to use them. Highs sound clean, Mids were spot on, nothing was muddy nothing was abrasive. Full range sounds good but using VSX presets make these things unstoppable.

now to get some Versarray subs.

also I wanted to say thank you for all of you that post on this forum, I was able to get these things set up with very little headaches.

I think I just paid $1400 for the QW-4 pair I got...yes, they were in pristine condition, not even 4 months old. But $800 for a pair? Dayyummm.

Glad you got them all working and VSX'd in bi-amp mode. Yes, the low end is great and yes they will rock. My QW-4s are replacing all duties held previously by my older SP-4s and newer SP-6s.

Keep rockin'!

Someone please chime in if I'm wrong:
I believe SJOW is typically more flexible, particularly when it comes to getting the strands into the NL4 connectors. - The individual strands of SJ are thinner and make for easier manipulation to insert (also makes them compress easier to hold into the screw terminals).

SOW or SOOW handles heat from the current better than SJ and is probably best for high current items like subs. Something where you need to get the cable laid out flat for looks this is probably not going to be the best however. That mostly depends on the jackets though.

When I upgraded the wiring at one of the venues at my job a few years ago, we went with SO for the installed wiring from speaker to a mounted patch panel next to the amp rack, then used SJ for the jumpers from that panel into the rack. I also make sure to use SJ for any of our smaller "portable" systems.

This is my experience, limited as that may be, YMMV.

The only difference in same sized SO and SJ is the outer insulation. SJ is less robust but is perfectly fine for speaker cable.

I use the SJ for speaker cabling. Lighter weight and it is usually placed where it doesn't get trampled.

Before a large weekend gig, I needed to make a few more cables and I was unable to procure SJ and got a spool of SO instead.....(HEAVY cable!)

SO is rated for 600v and SJ for 300v per the writing on the cable itself.

I now use the 4 core SO cabling for monitors - musician's feet are repelled by the thick outer sheath.

I get it by the 250' spool from my local electrical supply warehouse.

Hope this helps,

SJ is plenty good for speakers, no need to spend extra $ for SO unless it is for electrical power. Camel Traders http://cameltraders.com/ sometimes has good deals on 250' spools other wise your local electrical house.
