Testing a basket

Post by wldj4 » Sat Mar 31, 2012 4:01 pm

How do I do it? I'm cleaning stuff out and came across a 1502 DT 4ohm basket. I'm sure it is dead due to the gunk on the voice coil, but I'm not throwing it out until I can be sure. No way to install magnet and switch it into a cab. Need some guidance. Thanks.

This is just a basket, and there is no magnet installed? Does the meter check till work? I have the meter, so how do I go about that? What exactly am I looking for? Thanks.

the coil should read 6 to 8 ohms put your meter on the ohms scale and touch the leads one to the pluse one and the other lead to the minuse if its no good the meter wont move real easy to do

Ok. I had already done that, but wanted to check if the magnet made any difference. As it is a 4 ohm speaker, I thought I should should get something just short of that and I did. However, the value starts at about 3. and then begins to vacilate and drop in .1 increments down to about 1. something or less. Dead? I'm trying to clear out the junk, but I'll be damned if I'll throw out good gear. Thanks again.

a Four Ohm basket should have a DCR of about 3.2 - 3.5 Ohms. The coil and former should be perfectly round and free of any bubbles.

If it is destroyed, tear out the paper and and hang it on the back porch from a rope. Tie a metal bar to another rope and you now have an elegant dinner bell to call your kids or your dog.

Mine can be be heard 1/2 mile away!

They also make a great "cowbell" like percussive device on a drum kit....
