spade vs screw type???
spade vs screw type???
just wondering whats everyones' opinion on using screw type vs spade/clip neutrik speakons for building my break-out panel..i'm tri-amping and also using 4/10 awg cable for subs and 4/12 for the SP2s..i would solder the clips on the spades if i went that way. they just seam a lil "lite duty" to me. i'm currently using stacked banana plugs on the subs but plan on getting this panel built for quicker set up and putting lable tags to help identify cables and somewhat fool proof( i did say somewhat) connections.. i've seen a few pics on here and really like what i've seen

Re: spade vs screw type???
Geno,
What about the spade plugs seem light duty? Once soldered it is a permanent (unless you unsolder it) solid electrical connection. In fact, if the spade terminals worry you, neutric has a new 40-amp plug with some really beastly terminals. I don't need near 40 amps but the price was similar so I tried them out when adding a couple jacks to my patch panel recently. They screamed "heavy duty" all the way around.
I'd opt for the solid solder connection perhaps except at any critical points that could need to be quickly rewired in the event of a catastrophic failure.
Just my 2 cents, but im sure there are plusses and minuses both methods.

Re: spade vs screw type???
ok, thanks, gona check that out...just looking at the spades on back and then looking at 10 awg wire..seems the spades should be bigger and thicker, btw these were neutrik brand NL4, i will have some short cables to bypass patch panel just incase something goes crazy with connections or i have to switch to spare amps..

Re: spade vs screw type???
If you know how to solder, I would use a spade type NL4 and solder the cables on to it. When I built my patch bay I used screw type panel NL4's and there have been a few times that I've had to go in and tighten loose wires as the screws sometimes come loose during travel. If I had it to do over again (and I do, when I have time) I will use spade types and solder the connections.

good info guys.. thanks. no problem for me and soldering.. Mr Brad? the pic says female socket? i would need NL4MP for my panel or did you do something different? the cables are female right?

Re: spade vs screw type???
Neutrik has spade connectors that you could crimp and solder onto the wire end, then it will lock in place on to the NL4 spades. All the spades on the Neutrik connectors have a small hole in them that allows the spade connector I mention to lock onto it. They are also a very tight fit for proper connection
I do not like soldering directly to the spades for the following reason(s):
A. you run the chance of deforming the plastic structure of NL4 or NL8 when soldering because of the heat generated during this process. This can lossen the internal contacts of the NL4 or 8 internally just enough that they will wear prematurely.
B. if you ever need to remove a wire lead from the NL4 or 8, again, you'll have to heat it up to do so. The spade conectors I mention can be pulled off by simply pushing in the locking mechanism with a small screw driver or the tip of a ball point pen.
If you need the Neutrik P/N for these connectors, let me know and I'll pull a bag out tonight and post it.

Re: spade vs screw type???
You are correct, Geno. In Brad's defense, it's kind of odd and easily confused as you insert the FEMALE Speakon into a MALE Speakon. Usually the male gets inserted into the female...........true with cables as well.Geno1 wrote:good info guys.. thanks. no problem for me and soldering.. Re: spade vs screw type???
My two cents would say to add a dab of solder to the male/female connection too.
