Buying an amp based on the Vypyr models?

Post by Xionor » Fri Jun 20, 2014 10:27 am

Hi,

I'm wondering if you buy one of the amps the original Vypyrs use for modeling, what are the chances it will sound like it?

Thing is i've tried to play around with all the amp models and settings on the Peavey and the tone i like the most is the Krankenstein(K-stein).

I was considering buying a real Krankenstein but then again I'm not sure if it's not gonna sound completely different than the Peavey model seeing seeing as every single element in it is completely different.

I can't try a Krankenstein beforehand since I need to order it internationally.
Any tips?

I can only comment on the 6505.
I had both the 75w Vyp and 6505 112 combo in my house for about a week.
I was able to dial in the Vyp to sound almost identical to the 6505. Close enough for my ears anyways.
The only shortcoming of the Vyp was once you started to push up the volumes. The 6505 won out when pushed.

Depends. If you have a Vypyr combo, a Dual Rec though a Mesa 4x12 is going to soud different than the Vypyr through it's one speaker. But the Vypyr gives you a sense of the differences between the amps it models. On my Tube 120 head, they are damn close, since I run it through a 4x12 with V30s and H100s, and the tube power section gives it that squishy tube feel.

I have had a JSX, 3120, 6505+, and 6505, all heads, and the Vypyr pretty much nails them. Even that annoying "cocked wah" of the JSX, and the "squeaky" mids of the 6505+.

Thanks for all the info guys!

I checked a lot of Krankenstein demos on the net and they do indeed sound amazingly like the amp model on the Vypyr.
I guess Peavey did a really great a job at the models.
Now to try to get my local dealer to import a Krank for me from the states : )

I'm late to the party, but I will note that I did this. e-merlin and Bertotti were always talking (? writing) about how great the Triple XXX's clean channel is. Once I got my 75, I did some comparisons of all the clean model offerings. The Triple XXX won by my ears. About 6 months later a Triple XXX half stack showed up on my local Craigslist and I snagged it.
