Quality of VIP amp models

Post by Jspencer » Wed Jul 16, 2014 3:14 pm

I tried an experiment last night.

I hooked up an A/B box to my VIP1 and my Fender Deluxe Reverb tube amp. After setting the VIP on "TWN" (the VIP's blackface Fender model) and maxing pre- and post gain and doing a little tweaking to the VIP's settings to approximate the Fender's tone settings I played my guitar and switched between the two amps.

The VIP1 sounded very /similar/close to the tube amp. Like 90% or better close. When I closed my eyes I couldn't decide which sounded better to my ears. The VIP1 was handicapped by a much smaller speaker that rolled off some highs and lows, therefore sounding "smaller" and the reverb sounded a little more "perfect" than the springs-n- tube of the Deluxe, but amazingly close otherwise. The VIP run through the Deluxe's 12" Jensen was even closer--same "big" sounds and extended highs and lows.

I knew the models were good in the Vypyrs and VIPs but the closeness of the sounds surprised me.
Guitars: Fender Tele and Strat, Ibanez ES 53, Epiphone Joe Pass, Junior and Casino, Traveler Escape and C1, Lag, Ovation and Hermida acoustics. Basses: 1983 Squier Precision bass and Precision/Tele bass
