I blew my fuse in my amp recently and I looked at the tubes in the back and one of them is darkened in color, and I've had a few tell me I need to replace my tubes in my amp. Only problem is that I don't have any knowledge about what tubes to use.
I'm looking for something to give me the performance I had before, and be reliable but be affordable as well. If someone to share their knowledge of what tubes would work the best for my amp I would really appreciate it! Thanks!!!
Need Tube Advice for Vypyr 120
Re: Need Tube Advice for Vypyr 120
I'd call TubeDepot and ask them for suggestions , the tubes are 6L6's if I remember correctly.
Or call Peavey Parts department
Hope this helps

As classy mentioned a matched quad set of Sovtek 6L6WXT+'s (Plus) for the power section of it. Im not shure how many pre-amp tubes the 120's have but on my 60 its just 1 & I recommend in that reguard a Tung Sol 12AX7 .... 1 of the other tube users also suggested it & honestly its definatly helped with making the amp clearer & more defined for all the amp models & effects.

Re: Need Tube Advice for Vypyr 120
I grabbed a matched quad set of Sovtek 6L6WXT+ and a Sovtek 12AX7LPS preamp. I had saw pretty much everywhere that the Sovtek's were the recommended ones and Tube Depot had really good prices too. I got one Pre-amp tube like the 60's btw if anyone is wondering. I'm going to take it to my local guitar shop to have them installed when they come in. I heard they can be dangerous, thanks for all the help!!!! I can't wait to plug back in again I love this amp!!!
Re: Need Tube Advice for Vypyr 120
You might consider an upgrade from the WXT+, which came stock in a lot of these amps. This tells you they are cheap, entry level, basic. Not a bad tube, but not a great tube either IMHO.
Needing 4 is costly, so best advice is read a few reviews, check out tube depot for some other info, and aim higher than the basics. This is your chance to improve your tone for the first time.
Dont wast it on the cheapo's. You may save $20 -$40, but you get what you pay for.
And dont forget that single 12AX7. They are CHEAP. Get yourself the best you can for your ear. Borrow some from friends and pop em in your amp. Bigger difference can be heard than you may have been led to believe. I ended up running a NOS Mullard CV4004 in mine after a lot of experimentation. The pre amp tube effects the grit, grind and EQ to my ears. You may find something else you love if you havent ever tried.
Good hunting.

Re: Need Tube Advice for Vypyr 120
I have a Vypyr 120 and I put new tubes in it about a year ago. It came with JJ's 6L6 from Peavey. I wanted to put close to the same thing back in.
I went to Doug's Tubes. I bought a matched set or matched quad of RUBY 6L6GC-CZ which ran me about $76 for the four. There is only one pre-amp tube. I got the RUBY 12AX7AC5 HG+ supposedly to be warm and clean which went for about $18. I did have to pay shipping also. My Vypyr sounds better than it did. I said it sounded better but that was partially due to needing new tubes. I could pick up truckers talking every now and then; I am not sure how though. My shortwave friend told me that I needed new tubes. I do not hear voices now….sounds like a bad movie.
I know that there are better tubes but I tried to create a balance between tone, quality and price. I would follow the classic 30 guy's advice because he is an amp tech.
I hope this helps.

Re: Need Tube Advice for Vypyr 120
In the 120 and 60 both, the 12AX7 is used as the PI. Some people recommend using one that has been tested for both sides of the tube matching. I have not seen where that made a difference. Just a good, high quality 12AX7 seems to do the trick. I am running a TAD 12AX7 in my 60. It does fine. And, for what its worth, the Ruby 6L6s do fine for what I need. (I do wish it supported EL34s. I like 6L6s, but really like EL34s).
