Uses for a dead Vypyr II (Stereo Vypyr)

Post by j_fury68 » Sat Apr 11, 2015 9:13 am

The recent post about uses for a dead Vypyr got my wheels turning on an idea for some vypyr 15 parts that I had left over from some other projects. So I had a 15 cab, speaker, enclosure and power amp section left over. I decided that it would be a cool experiement to use it with my zoom effects processor that has a stereo out option. I have already been using this unit with my effects loop modded Tube 60 with good results. I quickly patched into the power amp on the 15 watt shell, soon to be "slave amp", give it an "on" light and put a 50k pot in the signal path to help adjust levels to match the driving amp, in this case I tried the tube 60 first as I had not completed the effects loop mod on my other 15 watter. I had to play with volume levels, but proved that it works. So I completed that effects loop mod on the 15 and put some finishing touches on the other 15 cab. Pros that I can see for doing this are: Being able to use stereo delays and other stereo effects, works well with sanpera pedal volume and using up otherwise useless parts. Cons (can possible be resolved with some tweeking): Biggest problem is adjusting the volume on the main amp doesn't effect the slave amp. The volume of the slave amp is very much like plugging a device into the aux. jack on the fron't of the amp. Adjust the volume on the device to control it, in this case on the effects processor. Once you have both amps with equal volume then you can use a sanpera pedal to control volume on both as the sanpera controls volume at the DSP and not the power amp. If you don't have a Midi jack as the 15 watt lacks one, then you can adjust the post gain to effect volume for both amps. So there are some things to consider here. Wanted to do a video, but haven't figured out how to show off stereo sound on a youtube vid with the equipment I have.

So you made it into a powered monitor essentially.

Essentially yes, but it doesn't sound as cool when you say it that way
Still it is a use for an amp with a dead DSP board and in the stereo application I am using it in sounds pretty sweet.

LOL, cool.

I suppose you could also take the DSP a out of a Zoom or the like, and find a way to mount/power it in the chassis and make your own custom combo.
