vypyr 30 tube-like clean only at high volume

Post by mosca_merscal3m3 » Sun Mar 13, 2011 1:55 pm

hey everyone

a newcomer here. just got myself a vypyr 30 and its nice except, on the twin & classic green models, i can only get that good glassy tube like tone if the volume is turned up quite a bit. if i turn it back down to 1 it just sounds like a regular solid state amp. does anyone else have any experience with this?

Squeeze it a little, baby. The squeeze effect may help, perhaps some delay without repeats, but at a volume of 1, well, it's not gonna have very much oomph and will probably be pretty thin.

at "1" all my tube amps sound pretty crappy, too, for that matter.

That's the really interesting thing about these Vypyrs. I'm not sure if it's because of Peavey's Transtube circuitry, but even the solid state versions tend to "act" like tube amps.

This morning I was tooling around with a really basic Kstein red setting with some delay. It was at a very low volume, and although it sounded decent, it was kind of weak and fizzy. I turned the volume up a bit more, so that it was just very SLIGHTLY less than 1, and it was a whole different animal. The fizziness was gone, and the tone had become so dynamic and powerful. I'm sure the same thing applies to cleans as well.

Yeah, I think EVH once said volume is tone

A lot of the guitarist i like such as Bonamassa, Ford, Johnson, and Trower all have very high stage volumes. Brad Paisley says he cant get "his" tone unless its cranked pretty high

I think at more volume the speakers are able to do their thing at low volume they barely move

I'm not very deep into acoustics science-wise, but that 12-inch speaker hardly moves at all at low volume. So, yeah, you'd have to turn the volume up in order to get tone. My V30 is virtually bassless at volumes lower than 1.
Oh, and it's a lot of fun when you set up a patch on low volume, save it and a couple of days later you play it at normal volume. A priceless what-was-I-thinking-when-I-though-that-sounded-cool moment every time. 8)
