Thoughts on a 1x10 ext cab for a 1x12 C30 combo?

Post by LarryO » Wed Apr 27, 2011 9:30 am

Anyone running this config? Thoughts? I have a Classic 30 combo with a Weber Blue Dog and have a 10" Emi Rajin Cajun laying around, thinking about a tweed cab from Lopo or Avatar. I have other amps I could use this cab for too, which appeals to me. Also wonder if a closed or open back would be better in this setup.

Thanks,

Larry

8 ohm Cajun. I thought the ext cab runs 8, not 16 ohms on the C30. Am I wrong?

Ok, refreshing my memory about C30 config., it is my understanding that the amp runs a 16ohm load on the main speaker and can run an 8 ohm ext cab ONLY if the stock speaker is disconnected. Otherwise any ext cab run in conjunction with the stock speaker should also carry a 16 ohm load. Is this correct?

If so, they I might be looking at another 1x12 to house a 16 ohm Texas Heat :-)

Classic 30.......

Built For 16 Ohm On-Board AND 16 Ohm Extension.

Using 16 On-Board and 16 Extension requires amp changeover to 8 Ohms.

8 Ohms kicks in automatic when 1/4" male plug inserted into extension cabinet jack.

"8 Ohm" marked at jack confuses everyone.

8 Ohm speaker set aside OR use toward equipping 212 cabinet.

Two 8 ohm speakers wired for 16 Ohm Total Cabinet Rating.

Adding a 16 ohm 10" really would not help you in any way at all. Now, get a 15" 16 ohm speaker in a small cab, now you will get all the bottom you could want. It will knock your sox off.

I love tens and can't imagine it adding nothing. Another source of air movement and that distinct punch is what I'd expect, maybe even a little side wash/monitor if nothing else. I've thought about a 1x15 to expand the C30 into Delta Blues territory. But these days I don't need extraordinary stage volume or thunderous bass response. I leave that slice o' the pie to the bass player or keys. I'm seriously entertaining the notion of a tweed Lopo 1x12 for the aforementioned Texas Heat. The post down the page about their specials had me poking around on their site; $50 off on a 1x12 with the moving sale special. Hmmmm.

You should be ok Larry and the 8 ohm is fine. The extension out is an 8 ohm extension as when paralleled to a 16 ohm = 8 ohm and the speaker load will be 5.3 ohms. If you like the 10's it can't hurt anything trying. IMO it will be a little brighter with the 10 but nothing an eq in the loop won't take care of. Electrically no harm done.

How would Gear Heads write description of a 10" PLUS 12" speaker cabinet :?:  :!:

10" and 12" speakers should complement each other for highs, mids, lows.
