Personally expected longer list.
Sears should consider cutting back to appliances and tools.
Craftsman Tools still have a loyal following.

Bought my first set of Craftsman tools in 1979 with my employee discount. The 500 piece Mechanic set. Still have them. Have had to trade a few in for free replacements over the years, but what the hey....they have lasted this long!Classic30inCincy wrote:Craftsman Tools still have a loyal following.
Of course the ones I lost have had to be replaced at cost....
Cheers,

Sears (I can't speak to Kmart, haven't been in the one here in years) just doesn't compete price-wise on TVs, washer/dryers, refigerators, etc. compared to Best Buy, Target, etc. And, no offense to anyone, their clothes are more in line quality-wise with Walmart as opposed to Macys, Belk, etc.
Am surprised to not see my local Kmart on the list (yet).

I like Sears. Especially for Craftsman tools, but I've had good luck with their clothing too. Like the tools, I've found Sears and Roebuck brand clothes tend to last a long time. And their automotive dept. doesn't suck either. I'm thankful there aren't any Texas stores on that list.

Our Sears, Old Navy and Best Buy are closing. Home Depot closed last year.
But our Kmart survives.

They're closing our main store, too. Hard to imagine it will soon be gone. Oh the days of Danelectro.....man.....there was a time when a "department" store was such a cool thing, even for a kid just getting into guitar. Well, we get what we asked for: cheap prices & online "stores" that cause brick & mortar stores to shut down cause they can't compete. Who needs service if my price is cheap, right? Sad to see SEARS go.
Re: List of Sears, Kmart stores closing down for good
My dad worked for Sears from right after WWII till the late 1970's. He did very well with them...they paid a lot of stock instead of cash bonuses and the stock went crazy for the whole time he worked there. He retired at age 55, and had a great long life. They treated their workers very well, and the company grew for decades.
My brother worked at the same Sears store after he got out of the Army in the mid '70's...He applied for a credit card there and they rejected him because he didn't make enough money. They treated their newer workers pretty shabbily, the idea being that the top people were not making enough and workers too much.
I have not bought a thing from Sears since my before brother stopped working for them in the late '70's, after their garage did some work on my car and it came out with more problems than it had before.
I was sorry to see Sears go downhill so far, but I won't be sorry to see it go bankrupt. Their management screwed themselves and all who worked there.

Yeah well, don't confuse Sears Inc with your local Sears store. All it takes is a negative store manager to infect the attitude of the entire store, while the store the next town over might be a great place.
I usually buy tires at my local Sears. I might save $20 somewhere, but I can drop into any Sears in the country with a tire problem and get it covered under "road hazard."
In my experience, Sears stores are "nicer" than Wal MArt stores. Wal Mart, Target, K Mart all tend to be shelves with goods on them. Products at Sears more "on display," than simply stocked. Sears tends to be more spread out with things sitting on litle stands everywhere. The difference? My mom would be a lot more likely to enjoy shopping there than Wal Mart. Shopping for power tools at Sears compared to the warehousy feel of Home Depot is a different experience. I am a pretty blue collar kind of guy. MY dad was white collar through and through. The store environment matters to a lot of people. Dad would prefer Sears.
But not everyone is willing to pay a few extra percent for a "nicer" store to shop in. SO stores close.
Chevy Malibus park at Wal MArt, Buicks park at Sears.
Can't just blame online sales. If it were that simple, ALL the box stores would be failing. Sears, KMart, TArget, even Macys. If I am shopping for gifts, I do a lot online, but if I want a bag of underwear or socks, I sure as hell am not going to order it and pay shipping.
Sears focused on a market segement that is shrinking. They need to adapt to the market or fail completely and vanish.

Re: List of Sears, Kmart stores closing down for good
Interesting, I was reading an article yesterday talking about other stores' woes including Best Buy. Recently I was in the market for a TV stand. I found one on-line at Best Buy's website I liked, I wanted to get it from the store in town, but the website said it wasn't in stock there. I went anyway to see what else they might have, and not only did they have the one on display, they had them unopened in the back.Enzo wrote:Can't just blame online sales. I should have taken that as a sign and bought it on-line anyway, but I decided to buy it there. A salesperson helped me right away, but I had to WAIT and WAIT for someone to get it out of the back, and while I was waiting someone was trying to sell me Direct-TV the whole time.
Speaking of Macy's, I was in my local store not too long ago and there appeared to only be ONE salesperson on the entire second floor. Checking out there was not very speedy either, but at least no one was trying to sell me a satellite TV package.
So while I agree with you that internet sales aren't entirely to blame, I'd also say poor customer service has a lot to do with these stores' problems too.

That may be possible due to their online operations because I recently got plenty of discount through or I think that there must be some sound reason of closing these stores.
