Microphone Cables

Post by studiodtk5 » Tue Oct 30, 2012 10:41 pm

I am a bit confused at all of the different microphone cable choices available from Peavey. Is there a guide or comparison chart somewhere that explains the differences between the different cable offerings?

I just recently purchased two PV25 microphone cables because the price was so good. The cables appear to be decent quality, although I think these are the low end series.

I don't know that there's a chart, but as a basic rule (with Peavey cables, at least) the more expensive the series, the better quality the components that go into making the cable. The PV series are pretty basic cables and work fine. As you go up in price they add things like higher grade Neutrik connectors, gold contacts, and more flexible (i.e. less memory) cable. If you click on a mic cable and then click on the FEATURES tab, you can see the specifics of a cable.

Here are the features of a PV series cable:

- Equipped with Neutrik® connections
- 25 ft. length

And here's the feature list of an AU-2 cable:

- Peavey-designed air-enhanced dielectric cable
- Low-capacitance, quiet cable
- Neutrik® XLRs with gold contacts
- 22 awg. twisted pair, dual-shielded cable
- 25 foot length

Don't believe me. I'm just guessing.

Thanks for the information Josjor. I understand typically the more expensive cables are the better cables. The problem I was having is the information available doesn't let me make a totally informed decision beyond the cost.

I have put together a spread sheet on the Peavey microphone cable offerings. I did just the standard straight xlr to xlr cables. Peavey offers other cables, such as right angle connectors, 1/4" connectors on one end, etc. Those cables are not included.

As you can see there are areas that have NA in the chart. That means I could not find the information on those cables for that feature.

If anyone has the information, please update the spread sheet and repost.

I have 2 Peavey XLR cables that I love. They are really well built and are about 25 ft. long. The thing that stands out about them is that they have a red on/off ring on the female end. I like the cables and have probably had them for 8-12 years and I'd like to get more, but I haven't seen them nor do I know what model to ask for. Any suggestions?

The ones I have have a red switch ring on the XLR plug and I don't remember them being $50...they were more like $30...

Well the $50 price is when you buy direct from Peavey. A quick internet search of the product number revealed:

I am going to guess that the photo is not the correct cable. The description indicates the following:

High-quality Neutrik® metal shell male XLR connector and NC3FX-S Female XLR with switch with silver contacts. Which is:

So I think they cables are just as you previously purchased. You can search the net for your own supplier. Or just give Josjor a call, I'm sure he can hook you up.

Bump this to the top.

I was hoping someone at Peavey would be able to update the spread sheet or help out by giving us more information on some of the cables. :D
