Peavey Awards & GRAMMY Celebration Earn 'Event of the Year'

PEAVEY INT'L. HEADQUARTERS - The Mississippi Tourism Association presented Meridian-based Peavey Electronics with its Event of the Year award at the 2008 MTA Tourism Awards, held during the Governor's Conference on Tourism, February 19 at the TelCom Center in Jackson.
Peavey Electronics Founder and CEO Hartley Peavey and President Mary Peavey accepted the award for their work producing Mississippi: Celebrating a 50-Year GRAMMY Legacy, the state's first Recording Academy-sanctioned event, which the company co-presented with host Governor Haley Barbour last April in Jackson.
Peavey was key to making 'Mississippi: Celebrating a 50-Year GRAMMY Legacy' a reality, said Susan Speed, Executive Director of the Mississippi Tourism Association. Peavey is one of the most well known and highly respected companies in the music industry, and Mississippi is very fortunate that Peavey is helping to promote our state as the 'Birthplace of America's Music' to its global audience. Speed added that Mississippi's ongoing Birthplace of America's Music tourism brand campaign received a huge boost from the event.
The celebration featured performances from rock roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis, gospel greats The Williams Brothers, country-music icon Marty Stuart, blues-rock sensations The North Mississippi Allstars and guitar legend James Burton, as well as the inaugural Peavey Awards. Named for Hartley Peavey, the Peavey Award honors Mississippi's many GRAMMY winners and nominees, as well as individuals who have played a significant role in developing and furthering the state's musical heritage.
Since the inception of The Recording Academy's GRAMMY Award in 1958, a disproportionate number of winners--more than forty--and a vast number of nominees have been Mississippians. The performers, along with Peavey and Barbour, received the first Peavey Awards.
Without the wealth of musical talent that has come from Mississippi, Peavey Electronics simply would not exist, said Hartley Peavey, whose musical aspirations were electrified during a 1957 concert by McComb native Bo Diddley. The best part about this celebration is that all proceeds benefited the Mississippi Blues Foundation and the Mississippi Blues Trail project, which is helping to educate about the history of blues music throughout the state. That means a lot to me as a big fan of blues music.
Jon Hornyak, Senior Executive Director of The Recording Academy's Memphis Chapter commented, The incredible musical influence of Mississippi artists is undeniable, and it is safe to suggest that virtually every GRAMMY nominee and winner has used Peavey products on stages and in studios during their careers.
Hartley Peavey built his first amplifier in the basement of his family's home in Meridian in the year prior to the first GRAMMY Award. Today, Peavey is still based in Meridian but does business in 136 countries through 33 facilities--nearly all of which are in Mississippi--and is an industry leader in patents and innovations.
