How many of you record your music or practice sessions?

Post by MTkid » Sun Apr 10, 2011 7:22 am

I was curious if a lot of you out there are recording your guitar playing?. Doing it for a project, album or just noodling around laying tracks down to play over and have fun and keep ideas on file? I havn't recorded in a long time and I am feeling the urge to set up a studio that incorporates my computer and not just the old Yamaha 4 track, yes I am "Old School". Please let me and others know what you are doing and what you are using and any suggestions you have for gear or programs.

Thanks,

I record most of our practice sessions. I also ocassionaly record a background chord track for practicing solos.

When its the whole band practicing I like us to concentrate on playing, not recording. As such I simply set up a Zoom H2 to pick up the entire band. Works phenomonally well, but we are an acoustic band. If you're one of those long-haired-booger-infested-crunchy-guitar-bites-heads-off-rats-nasty-rock-n-roll-modern-stuff :D bands, you may have to fiddle with the placement of the recorder a bit to use this technic.

well since its just me i rarely record anything,it gets very frustrating when you have no one to jam with and makes it harder to come up with some good riffs.ive been in search of someone who rights digital drums or something with a program but ive came up empty.but when i do record i run the line out to a laptop and i use audacity, its like a cheap free pro tools but it does the job.from the line out i use a splitter so i can run the sound to a set of computer speakers,i still lose so much volume when recording....i have to turn the amp down so far then i dont really hear what im playing.

We use the Zoom H4n to record rehearsals, then we can hear what we need to work on individually. The recordings it makes are really amazing with just the tiny built in mics.

Back in the old days there was not a lot
of recording options. We worked so hard
on recording, it seriously hurt our practices.

I just started using a cassette recorder.
Just set it and forget it.

Now days I just use a cheap Tascam
DR-03.

It don't sound bad at all.

Amazing what technology has brought to
the low budget musicians.

I do, and here's some samples....

I keep it simple with an old Sony Stereo Digital Voice Recorder for making the
recordings.

I like to record original material, demos, etc. Have used lots of different devices over the years, from bouncing off cassette decks to TASCAM 4 track recorders, to recordable CD decks. Currently use Cakewalk Music Creator on my PC, TASCAM USB interface for input, and Steven Slate Drums for my drum loops (thanks to xjbear for that last recommendation).

No matter what you use, you have to be patient and learn how to get the most out of your equipment. I don't have a dedicated 'music room' or 'studio', but I have a finished room in my basement where I keep everything ready to go. It took a little planning, but I have mics on stands behind a chair, amp behind a couch, guitars on stands, etc. So I can pull stuff out, record, then put it all back easily.

I have a complete recording studio setup in my house with everything from the portable handheld devices to a 24 track reel-to-reel, For the simple one-off stuf we use the hand held device and it works great. I have the Olympus version and couldn't be happier.

Ok you all got me worked up and I started pulling my gear out of storage. Last night I set up my mackie 1402 VLZ pro mixer and set up my Yamaha MT4x four track recorder and my DBX dual channel 31 band EQ. Dusted off my old Boss Dr-550 Drum Machine and my little nano-verb effects unit. Now I have to remember how to route all the cables to make this beast roar to life. I even downloaded Reaper which is a DAW for recording and mixing on the PC and also Oxygen, which is a drum and beat sequencer.

Now the real challenge is to see if my mental capacity is sharp enough to make all this technology work together to make and record some music. Well if guitars and effects pedal mods weren't enough, now I can put the sound engineer hat on too. Nothing like having a hobby that dominated your time and pocketbook. hahaha.

I will keep you all posted as to my progress and will post some picks of my Man-cave recording studio.
If it wasn't for my hobby of guitars and everything related, including you guys here in the forum, I don't know what I would have to look forward to, it has breathed new life into me and will be a welcome distraction from always thinking about my aches and pains in life, this will keep me challenged now for a while.

Good luck, don't get frustrated as you set things up and learn to use the DAW. I really worked for hours to get my latest setup working well, and there were times I wanted to take a sledgehammer to it! But I'm happy that I soldiered through it...

Thanks dino_j

I just downloaded the updated Reaper manual, I will take it slow and work my way through it. I have a cheap Behringer analog to digital usb converter, I may find that I need to have a better interface, time will tell. I love my old Yamaha 4 track, simple to use and is a nice scratch pad for practicing ideas. I can sometimes get fogged with technology but am pretty good about backing off before I feel violence.hahaha. May kick the dogs but no broken guitars or gear here!

I'm not a player but I have been doing sound for a long time. I have recorded the bands that I have worked with since I started doing sound in the late 60's. It is important for the players to hear the music when they aren't playing and thinking about it. This improves everything from every player and me as the sound guy. I recommend recording Practice and performances as much as possible.
