Which Peavey Amp do you have

Post by xStonr » Sun Sep 14, 2008 12:29 pm

Since we're starting out fresh again, I thought we should let everyone tell us about their amps.

I have a Classic 30 in the black tolex ( :( Of course I would have preferred tweed) But it still sounds great. My current tube configuration is: v1-NOS DuMont 12ax7, v2-Tung Sol 12ax7, and v3-EH 12ax7. For the power tubes I have a matched quad of those new Mullard EL84. The amp sounds great running through a 2x12 closed back with Greenbacks and a 1x12 with a Weber ceramic Blue Dog.

All subject to change.

Tell my about yours.

I'm a solid state guy. (ducking anything thrown by the tube guys). My first amp was a Peavey Backstage way back in '83 that I sold a few years go. I got my first Bandit in '85 and been using it as my main amp ever since. I have also had at one point or another: Another mid 80s Bandit, late 80s Rage, an early 2000s Envoy 110, a newer Audition, a late 80s Backstage 110, Vypyr 15-watt. I just added a Vypyr 30-watt with Sanpera I to my remaining Bandit. I also picked up a VSS 20 and got a Musician 400 head that needs some work.

I too am a SS guy. With peavey's transtube it ain't a bad way to go. I own an XXL head which I absolutely love and will soon be an owner of a Vypyr once they get the bugs fixed. It's a shame, because I heard they sound amazing...I just hope peavey gets their act together on these (vypyrs), because reliability is one of peavey's best attributes.

Just got this two week ago as a rehearsal, jam and small gig amp...

Bravo with a Tone Tubby San Rafael speaker.

RCA 7025 in V1 - TAD 12AX7A-C in V2 - JJ 12AX7 in V3.

Still on the hunt for EL84s. Tried Sovtek EL84Ms, JJ EL84s and the original issue Sovtek EL84s.

TX head, still working on the tubes I like best, and the slant cab.
TX super forty converted to a head and mini stack with a 15 inch Weber California Ceramic in the ext cab. The chassis is back in the combo as I got tired of the head cab. Now I have to figure out what to do with a head cab built to hold a super forty chassis and reverb tank.
JSX mini colossal with a Lopo 2 x 12 loaded with Weber 1230-55 speakers 15 watt voice coils. The other two little amps aint Peavey, VJr. and Pignose.

I have a pair of Peavey tube amps..
Before listing, I want to say that I was getting DTs from not being able to log on the the Peavey forum. I never realized how much I count on visiting the forum every day...

#1 Peavey Classic 30 combo in black. Been rode hard and put up wet a bunch of times. This little darling has the Blue Guitar mods and Weber speaker in back. She talks, she sings, she makes other amps green with envy...Plugged into my 112 extension cab with a Weber California, she can keep up with all the big dogs and leaves most in her wake.

#2. Peavey Classic 50 212 combo. The big dog... heavy as hell, clean to die for, crunch to make pedals obsolete and built road tuff for the gigging musician. The surprise... all stock except a matched set of JJ tubes. I let my C50 head get away from me with the Marshall cab attached. Now I have this very unpretentious animal that will peal the paint off the walls and send solid states running for cover. Wonderful amp, just more than I need for everyday use. I will pack her when we play out...

#3 Fender Blues Deluxe RI.... she sits in the corner waiting for the Peavey amps to quit... more dust on her than you can imagine. Now and then I plug her in just to be nice.

I just picked up a used Triumh 60 1x12 combo($75)at pawn shop.Nice amp but was missing so bottom.Drop in a Celestion Lead 80 speaker, new set of Tung Sol 5881's( reissue) and did a diode mod on cr1 & cr2 (can actually be done by soldering 1 jumper),OMG, the difference. This is a must do mod to "wake" up this sleeping killer amp.I"ve heard this amp called a poor mans Mesa and I believe it now.The other guitarist in band plays $2000 dollar Zinkys an can"t beleive this amps dynamic and expressive tone now!In all I"ve got abot $300 in amp now ( Celestion Lead 80,Tung Sol 5881's tubes and a new footswitch) Anyone find 1 of these little monsters should pick it up,do the diode mod simple solder 2 simple jumpers over the diodes (CR1 and CR2)to remove them from the circuit and you"ve got one hell of an amp.
