Dating your circa 90's Classic 50

Post by andrewpmast » Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:43 am

I'm a new classic 50 owner and in my quest to date mine, I discovered that it's no longer possible (according to the sticky post).

However, I figured out that the sequence can provide some clues. I went through every single post by Roger Crimm (over 400) and looked for any post where he provided a customer with a shipping date on a classic 50. Then I put them in order of sequence (below). There are gaps in the 95-99 range, but the numbers so far might give someone an idea. Anyway, I think this might shed light for people like me who bought a used model from circa 90's.

I removed the last three digits of each person's serial:
00-05262xxx - 1991 Classic 50/212
00-05698xxx - 1992 Classic 50/410
00-05941xxx - 1992-93 (not enough data to nail down year) Classic 50/410
00-06110xxx - 1993 Classic 50/212
00-06186xxx - 1993 Classic 50 (wasn't specified)
00-06249xxx - 1993 Classic 50 Head
00-06317xxx - 1993 Classic 50/410
00-06511xxx - 1993 Classic 50/212
00-06672xxx - 1994 Classic 50/410
00-06814xxx - 1994 Classic 50/212
00-06849xxx - 1994 Classic 50/212
00-06968xxx - 1994 Classic 50/410
00-06790xxx - 1994 Classic 50/410
00-07029xxx - 1994 Cassic 50/410
00-07111xxx - 1994 Classic 50/410
00-11543xxx - 2001 Classic 50/210
00-11568xxx - 2002 Classic 50/410

If anybody out there knows their 90's serial and date of shipping, it would benefit folks if they can post the numbers here.

Maybe one day we can add this to the sticky.

I'm not sure that is correct. My ser# is 10724191 W/EFX
MFG LOC-03 00325710/JJJ28

The ser starts with a 1 not 00
Also i do know mine was made after 91 because it has the EFX loop.

Hope this helps as i have no clue when it was made.

Thanks for the info. I just got a Classic 50, and I was trying to figure out when it was made. Cheers.

Hey Harold,

I think for these 90's serials, the 00- can be stripped off and the rest of the number is the unique serial. Based on yours and the ranges I have gathered so far, yours is newer than a 1994 and older than a 2001. It seems closer to the 2001 date, so my wild guess is 1998-99. Hopefully as more people can post their verified shipping date with their serials, you can get closer to the approximate year it was shipped.

Normally I don't care when an amp was made. But if one needs to know, open the amp up and look at the date codes on the various parts. WHen you know when the parts were made, you know about when the amp was made with them.

Yea, I read that several times in the forum. I don't typically recommend that inexperienced folks like myself expose the chassis as a first resort. I'm happy I don't have to do open the amp to change tubes like I do with my JCA2112RC which I have to remove the chassis to swap tubes. I suppose that anybody brave or experienced enough to expose the inside won't bother inquiring anyway.

Classic 50 212 W/EFX
Serial is 00-06814822
MFG LOC-03
JEB07

I believe it's a 1994 model if I remember correctly.

When did they add the FX loop? I have both a 2x12 and a head that I bought new back in the early 90's and neither has an FX loop.....

the placement of the loop with what space was available certainly seems last minute.

The original Classic 50 was designed with no FX loop. But by the time it hit the market, such loops had become pretty much standard on guitar amps and customers wanted it. So they engineered it in and updated production. SO indeed it was fit into available space. They didn't want to have to completely redesign the whole amp.

There is a well made kit to add it to the early models. At this point I am not sure if the complete kits are still in stock, but one could make the addition on one's own with just the instruction sheet from the kit.

So mine are both first year production models. What year was the first year, '91?
