Thanks, it is my father's shop actually and his expertise although my design. Building this was quite a project so I decided for the time being to use the combo cab as the speaker cab for it. I replaced one of the blue marvels with a Warehouse G12C/S which sounds great. I also really like the short stack look.
Turning a combo into a head - Franken-amp
Re: Turning a combo into a head - Franken-amp
G'Day all,
Here are some pics of "Project Peavey" getting old so decided to convert my classic 50ii 4x10 combo into a head/cab.
I'm getting old , and it's getting too heavy, but I don't want to part with it so...
Decided to throw some 8" Jensens in at the last moment, just 'cause they would fit! and I'd have a portable amp!
Very happy with results so far... still waiting on oval Peavey badge to become available...the last piece of the puzzle!
Before: The Box
Speakers added:
After: Final Product (less missing badge):

Gerylock, welcome to the forum. That is really professional work. I like how you reproduced the Peavey look. Tweed, logo, and grille cloth make it look like a custom order from factory. Pics look great. Were you able to get the reverb pan in the head cab? Is this your first franken-amp?

Looks dead stock. Great cosmetic job. I love the idea of the 2 8's!
So, you can lift it, and it has enuf power to pop the dust shields off the speakers. Does it sound worth a damn? I love the work and the idea. It is a real sleeper.
Hearty thumbs up.

Re: Turning a combo into a head - Franken-amp
Hi Guys,
My Nick is supposed to be Greylock...typo on registering and can figure out how to change ??..
Sounds OK so far, haven't had a chance to play it in anger yet... Yes this is my 1st go at any thing like this...
Wanted to try and make it look as professional as possible. Spring reverb is in head, works fine.
Only cock up was not putting brace at bottom rear in quite far enough, so I've had to cut a notch so I can plug speaker jacks in...
But apart from that I'm stoked with the result .
Head weighs approx 12kg and cab is approx. 20kg.. still need to put a baffle in top rear of cab to fill the space left by amp..get oval peavey logo and some nyloc nuts for the handle..and job done....

Re: Turning a combo into a head - Franken-amp
I've cut down a couple of small combos and made heads out of them. I have a Blazer 158 that's almost done.
From
to:
I was able to get parts for it from Peavey. I'm working on the speaker jack (it has to float) then I can put it all back together.
Here's a cute 10 watt Squire that I cut down and had J Designs make custom 3 speaker cab for it:
It has 6.5", 8" and 10" speakers in it wired for a 4 ohm load:
When these tiny amps have decent speakers attached they sound awesome. My keyboard player uses the Squier SP10 & cab during practices. It's loud.

Just posted this here… but maybe it's better to continue this thread?
A couple of months ago, I made a 1x12" cab. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. Encouraged by that project, I decided to convert my favorite little combo amp into a matching head:
Vypyr 15 Head: gallery and build photos
Check out the full gallery above, but here's a before and after preview:
I'm just a tinkerer, and I barely know what I'm doing when it comes to this kind of thing... that said, I think things turned out pretty nicely! It was relatively easy to do, and a hell of a lot of fun to build.
If you're thinking about a project like this, do it! It's super fun and you'll have a one-of-a-kind amp. If you have done something like this (I know I'm not the first), I'd love to see pics!
A note about the Peavey Vypyr 15: I chose the Vypyr 15 to hack up for this project for a few reasons. First, it's a super fun little modeling amp with a decent range of tones and effects. Second, you can get these things on Craigslist for around $40... so it's a pretty low investment. If I screwed things up and had to scrap the project, I wouldn't have felt too bad. Third, the Vypyr software allows for cab swaps... meaning it's possible to voice the output of the amp to accommodate different styles of cab/speaker (to a limited degree). So this little Vypyr is now voiced a bit brighter than its default to compensate for the naturally added low end that a 12" speaker adds.
A note about the note about Vypyr cab swapping: So this cab swapping thing is only available with firmware version 1.58 (and beyond) of the Vypyr software. The original Vypyr that I bought ($25, Craigslist) was version 1.55. You can't update the Vypyr 15 because it's missing the requisite midi port that is used to push new software from your computer to the unit via a USB to midi cable (its larger siblings have a midi port). So, on the 15, you're stuck with whatever was installed at the factory. There's a thread on the forums that goes over all of this stuff. Anyway, every time one of these would pop up on CL or similar, I'd ask the seller to check the software version (yeah, I'm that guy). I finally found one on Reverb that clocked in at version 1.58. I picked it up for $45 including shipping!
