Questions about my purchase of a used Stereo Chorus 212

Post by cdssmiths » Sat Apr 22, 2017 4:06 pm

We purchased for $400 a vintage Stereo Chorus 212 Amp with the Scorpion face plate on the grill from Guitar Center's website for our son as a surprise. I'm not very knowledgeable about amps, but the head seems okay and the cabinet is in good shape. However, we noticed that the speakers in the cabinet are MCM Audio Select 55-3212, not Scorpions. We're not completely surprised over replaced speakers given the age. The SN on this unit is 00-06193549. MFG LOC-04. JDC10. The unit "sounds fine" so far to all of us.

Here are our questions though:
- Can we tell by the SN info roughly when this amp was manufactured?
- Is the true value of this amp in the head, or are the replaced speakers a bigger concern than we think?

Thanks for any insights / advice.
Regards,
Tim

Well a quick google search tells me that MCM Audio Select 55-3212 are $20 woofers. I would expect woofers to be a terrible choice and those speakers are nowhere near a Scorpion in terms of sound quality. Just a scientifical guess but I would think a pair of Scorpions would be much better than what's in it. Used Scorpions go for about $100 a piece.

Stereo Choruses go for about $250 or so WITH Scorpion in them so I think it was a bit overpriced to start with, and with those speakers I'd take it right back and get something else.

Plus 2, but they're going for $200, with Scorps, around here!

Thank you for all of the replies. We will take it back to Guitar Center. Should not be a hassle.

These are nice amps. Plenty of power, reliable, and very versatile.
If your son liked it, and if you're patient, you should be able to find one on craigslist for about $175 to $250.
The early ones ('89-'90), had a black face, Scorpions, and no Body (Mid) control.
The mid ones ('91-'93) had a teal stripe, Scorpions, no Body, then got Body.
The latest ones ('94-'95) had a teal stripe, Scorps, then Shefields, Body, and a digital foot switch option for the digital reverbs/delays.
