Peavey Solo Battery Amp Info

Post by zaxxon » Wed May 10, 2017 1:56 pm

I've seen online a blue stripe one, and one with a black face and big silver vertical stripes on the sides. Anyone know which came first and if there are any significant differences between them? It also seems that the blue stripe one is being sold as brand new, and vintage 1980's.

I know it's technically sold as a PA, but it seems like people use them as guitar amps.

Edit: Added a pic of a blue stripe sold as a 1980s amp.
Looking at all the photos more closely, I see that the blackface and the old bluestripe are labled Made in U.S.A., while the new bluestripe is Designed in U.S.A., so maybe blackface came first, then bluestripe, then import bluestripe?

Edit: The blackface had a serial # that began with 8A followed by eight digits, so a 1988 amp?

The black one came first. I just sold a blue stripe model that I retolexed. It was made in USA. Same amp. Blue stripes were 89-92 I believe.
If wrong, I'm certain someone will correct me. lol

Whoa, nice job. Thanks for the info. How did you like the amp? I've been thinking of getting one; there are a couple U.S.A. bluestripes like yours for cheap on CL kind of locally. I want something to use outdoors, playing primarily blues.

I was sitting in a little sidewalk cafe in Bern, Switzerland about 14 years ago and saw a guy walk by with a guitar case and a Peavey Solo strapped to his back. We were strolling around the city a little later and there the guy is, busking with a headset mic and playing the blues. He sounded really good too!

Kind of surreal to a guy from Mississippi, to be halfway around the world watching a Swiss guy playing the music of Mississippi on a Mississippi made amplifier...

Hah! Love it. That's what I wanted the amp for too, busking.

Strong little booger for battery op. Gives you more than you might expect, though a tad dry. I used a reverb pedal with mine and sold guitars at the flea market. It carried pretty well outdoors.

Takes 8 D cells, which effectively double the weight of the amp. they last pretty good though.

Probably room in there for a 12v gel cell, heavier yet, but a lot more life.

Thanks Dalrymple and Enzo. For what they cost, I might as well cop one and check it out. Is it possible to play mp3s through them?

Just ordered a U.S.A. bluestripe with a cord, online. There were three semi-local ones but all a little further than would be easy to get. The little bit extra I paid ordering would have been an equal cost to the gas/tolls required for a return trip to get one, plus buying an aftermarket cord. I may be back to this thread in the future to ask about that battery swap.

Got the amp and am really enjoying it. Loud f%÷ker.

Does anyone know how to open it up to check/change the speaker? I want to experiment with another one.
