Replacement speaker for stereo chorus 212
Re: Replacement speaker for stereo chorus 212
It's my understanding that if I were to use 8 ohm speakers the wattage would drop to around 65 watts per side. This opens up a whole new range of possibilites in terms of replacement speakers. If I were to go with 16 ohm speakers would the wattage be cut in half again (down to 32.5)? And would I be risking damaging the amp? I dont really play out so a drop in power or volume isnt a issue for me. Im just chasing the sound in my head

Being a solid state amp there's no real danger from running higher impedence speakers. I like the idea of going to 8 ohms. There's lots of great speakers in the 70W range out there. My favorite speaker for guitar amps is the Jensen Electric Lightning which go for ~$100 or so. But WGS makes some great sounding speakers for a bit less money.

Hi, are these 4 ohms scorps still available? The previous owner of my 90s SC 212 replaced one of the scorpion speakers (12425) by a really crappy korean speaker called "Hana SP120", 8 Ohms. If there are one or two 12425 still for sale, I would be willing to buy. Will you ship to Germany? Thank you very much!tothemax wrote:hi.

I think im gonna try running a emi v128 in place of the broken scorpion ( i found one for a great price). It's 8 ohms so if im unnderstanding things correctly that side will be runnimg at half power. My question is, besides the volume difference between the 4 ohm scorpion and the 8 ohm emi would there be any potential to damage the amp by using speakers with different ohm ratings? If the emi sounds good I intend to get a second one.

I don't think you'll have any problems.
Each speaker has it's own power amp, and it's safer going one Ohmage step up, rather than down (as in a 2 Ohm speaker).
Also, the volume difference might not be that great.

Installed the emi V128 and it sounds great. Nice balanced response and even some top end sparkle that I wasnt expecting. The only downside is the remaining scorpion now needs replacement as its clearly on its way out as well ( bad buzzy, farty sounds on the bass notes) i didnt notice it before I guess because the other scorpion was so badly blown. On the plus side tho, I can definetly recommend the V128 as a great replacement.
