Replacement speaker for stereo chorus 212

Post by James3348 » Sat May 27, 2017 3:24 pm

I could use some help. I recently bought a used stereo chorus 212 ( not sure of the year, but it's teal stripe USA made) and noticed the speakers are buzzy and farty ( for lack of a better description) on the bass strings. GC shipped the amp flat I instead of upright so maybe the speakers got damaged? What wattage and ohm rating would I need to look for in a replacement speaker? Also any speaker recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

Welome James3348!

All but the last couple years of the SC 212, came with 4 ohm Scorpions, that could easily handle whatever was thrown ay them.
I think their max wattage handling is 250 watts! Only Scorpions look, and sound like Scorpions.
IMHO, they're excellent speakers, quite tough, but unfortunately, getting rare.
The SC 212 can kick up about 130 watts per speaker (X2 :D )!

I think the last couple years of SC 212 ('94-'95?), came with a pair of Sheffields, but I don't which model, or ohmage.

Flat, upright, doesn;t matter. Before they go in amps, speakers in the box are almost always flat, they don't usually ship speaker boxes on end.

Since the speakers are driven independently maybe a good opportunity to play around a bit. Maybe a Texas heat and a tonker. I almost wish the wattage was lower so more speaker options were available.

Are you sure the speakers are the problem? I would clean all jacks and connectors to include reverb connections. If it has scorpions in it the voice coil grove in the magnets may have debris in them. First amp I bought with a Scorpion in it had been stored in a barn here in SW Oklahoma. The hole in the back of the magnet let a lot of dust in. Sounded crappy till I cleaned it out.

Pappy brought up a good point.
If it is the speakers that are bad, it's unlikely that both went at the same time.
With the amp OFF, try swapping the speaker leads, in order to isolate a bad speaker.
Also, consider a good pot/switch/jack D-5ing* before throwing in the towel on the speakers.
Does it have Scorps in it?

*DeOxit D-5...excellent contact cleaner

Yes it does have scorpions in it. I'm going to give everything a good cleaning tomorrow and see where it gets me. Is it difficult to clean the voice coil grooves? Im pretty handy, but I've never messed with speakers before except to change them out

So after a good cleaning of the pots, Jack's, and switches ( which made a world of difference) it appears the right speaker is blown. The left scorpion is fine, but a replacement scorpion is proving hard to find and expensive when one is found. Does anyone know of a replacement that matches well with a scorpion?

It's funny that when you have no use for a Scorpion or Sheffield you can find them at a reasonable cost. But as soon as you want one they are like hen's teeth. I was considering buying an old Bandit just to get the Sheffield I wanted. The used Sheffields were as high as a new Eminence Legend. I finally got lucky on an ebay bid. I like it in my Pacer.

I'm still looking locally for a trashed amp with a Scorpion. I'm sure there are some speakers that will work good with the Scorpion. I just don't have any experience in that area. Someon one the forum will give you good advice.

In that particular application, I was using two separate 2x12 cabinets each with 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel for a 4 ohm load..
Not sure if Eminence makes them in 4 ohm..
