Valveking questions
Valveking questions
Hey guys. Just got my first Peavey amp and am for the most part pleased. I've seen many mods to get the amp to sound like a Marshall or mess, but I'm wanting to get a blackface Princeton sound. The gain is way too harsh, and the amp sounds ok, but somewhat muffled. I also hate the reverb. I tried to use a delay pedal and it sounded awful with stock reverb, especially as a slapback. Would an old ampeg ss150 reverb work and if so, how difficult is it to swap it out? I know this is sing many questions, but I'd appreciate any info I can get. Thanks
Re: Valveking questions
The Ampeg has an Accutronics reverb...not sure if that helps anyone.

Hi!
Did you consider a reverb pedal?? I think what your looking for is spring reverb.
Maybe something like this: http://www.pedalspluseffectswarehouse.c ... s-fdr1.htm

Gotchya! I just suggested the pedal to give the VK a more Fenderish type of vibe.mborror89 wrote:I have considered a reverb pedal...just looking for a cheaper option atm if possible. i have a quality reverb in the other amp, but not sure if i can get it to work.
Because the Fender and Peavey are 2 different animals... the pedal will get you there quick.

Re: Valveking questions
I feel like the amp is choked almost....or maybe biased cold. I'd like to get a permanent remedy. But I do think i'll check that pedal out

Re: Valveking questions
I had the first VKs.
It was my go to amp for a couple of years. Great amp! Solid cleans and overdriven tones.
Do you have the VK or the VKII? New or used?

Re: Valveking questions
Got a new VK II for 350 bucks. That's why I'm willing to drop a couple bucks into it

Re: Valveking questions
Forgive my manners,
Welcome to the forum and Congrats on the amp
Here is a website with a ton of info to help you in your tone quest: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/s ... p?t=969296
Scroll through the whole first page. They talk about The “Dummy Jack” Mod. I don't know if this will apply to the new VK II, but its worth a try.
I read new / different tubes do wonders too!
Also try putting an EQ pedal in your effects loop, to liven it up. Or, just a short guitar cable between the send, to the return of the loop.
I was just researching all this because I was thinking of getting the VK II head myself, yet I went a different route.

Re: Valveking questions
If I understand correctly, this is a "new" amp? Play it awhile and let the speaker break in. Won't do anything for the reverb but it will sound better after it's been played awhile.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.

Re: Valveking questions
I have an older VK 212, that I replaced the original tank with an older (USA), Accutronics 4 series from a Bandit, much better to my ears! I think the # is 4EB2C1B.
Re: Valveking questions
Looks like my VK II combo 50 has digital reverb. There is no reverb pan in bottom of amp. Anyway, that’s a simple issue, just get a reverb pedal. It’s great to have an effects loop. I use a chours, delay, and a reverb pedal.
Which model did you get? For $350 it must be the Head version or the VK II combo 20. Those amps have EL84 output tubes. So for the blackface tones you want, or a clean scooped sound, I believe my VK II combo 50 with big-bottle 6L6 output tubes get me a great sound. Bass to max plus bright switch-on. I really like my VKII50, its got power going from clean to lead. I’d think with the EL84 tubes, it might sound more like a Blues Junior which use the EL84 tubes. And the VK MH version has no bright switch?
