Peavey 118 and 300 Series Monitor pairing?

Post by ChronicIguana » Sun Feb 05, 2017 3:54 am

Recently acquired a pair of 8 ohm Peavey 118 subs for sofa change at an estate sale auction. As I'm impedance impaired, probably best to ask what is likely a dumb question rather than blindly plow ahead and risk turning these things into door stops. The plan is to use one (or, perhaps, both) of a pair of spare 90W (8 ohms), 150W (4 ohms) Peavey 300 monitors to power these guys.

The 118's specs note that "two 1/4" phone jacks are connected in parallel for daisy chaining." If both 118's were used in this manner, would this drop the combined impedance from 8 to 4 ohms and, using one of the 300's 4 ohm outputs, produce the full 150 watts? Perhaps a better question: What is the optimum configuration? One amp, one output channel with two 118's in parallel? Two 118's, each connected to its own 4 ohm output channel (single amp)? Give each 118 its own amp? Or something else?

Also, the 300's manual isn't really clear when describing the amp's "low cut" function. Is this a low pass or a high pass? We understand the 300 likely isn't the best amp for this application, but we won't be demanding all that much from the thing. The subs will be used to add a bit bottom end to a vintage Hammond C3 organ we sometimes run through a NEO Vent rotary speaker emulator. And, of course, to add to the back line's visual punch. And BTW, the speaker package - for just $91 - also included a monster Peavey 410 TVX bass speaker cabinet. Gotta love these estate sales.

Yes, two 8 ohm loads in parallel is 4 ohms.

If the amp produces 150 watts at 4 ohms, then that is what you can get, 150 watts, shared by the two speakers, so 75 watts apiece.

Low cut means lows are CUT, so call it a high pass if you prefer. There would be little point in turning a low cut on to drive subwoofers.
