TNT130 Combo and M-3000 Amp Build

Post by IAmPhil » Fri May 17, 2019 4:57 am

I have a TNT130 combo with a replacement Black Widow 1508-4. This thing is quite literally 85 - 90 lbs.

I want to make a 110 combo out of the TNT130, using a Scorpion 10 and building a new cabinet for it. The combo would be fine to take to practice and 130 watts through a Scorpion 10 is plenty for that.

I then want to make a bottom for the combo using the Black Widow and my M-3000 amp. The 15 models great in a 3.5 cubic feet cabinet tuned to 35 htz. I know the 1508-4 isn't exactly a bass guitar speaker, but I own it and that is huge, so it's what I'm going to work with.

The M-3000 is a 3 rack space unit, so it is 19" wide. The TNT130 is 24.5" wide, so I plan to mount the M-3000 facing up in the bottom cabinet. Once I match the outputs I shouldn't need to adjust it, and the crossover is located on the TNT130. I will put the M-3000 to one side so there is as much room for the fan to work as possible, but the heat sink will be facing down. So long as there is air flow on the exposed side, and 1 inch below, the heat sink and the fan is un-obstructed, will this pose a cooling problem and possible damage the M-3000, or cause it to go into protection?

The TNT130 has perfect white lettering and the M-3000 is an ugly gold color and I don't want to have it silk screened white, there is only one control on the M-3000 so I don't really need to see it, and I think this would look good, especially if I go with a metal mesh grill like the modern Peavey combos.

I have a good solderer (my dad, electrical engineer) to replace the caps in the amps. The TNT130 is from 1983 and the M-3000 is from 1982 so I know this needs to be done. Are there any other thoughts or ideas anyone has? I'm sure something like this has been done before, but if anyone wanted to share experiences and tips that would be great.

Thanks for reading through the long post. I'll post a couple of pics of the combo and the amp in a few days.

I have a quick update on this project.

I got a Combo 210 TX. Granted, it is no more portable for practice than the TNT130, but it sounds awesome. :D

I'm still going to do the Black Widow in it's own cabinet with the M-3000 and use the Combo 210 TX's crossover.

As for a portable cabinet for practice: I'm going to cut the TNT130's cabinet down and use either 1 neo magnet 10" or 2 neo magnet 8" speakers. Should be a lot more portable than it is now.
