Peavey T-60

Post by OldSkull75 » Sat Sep 25, 2010 8:17 am

My First Peavey guitar... Its a 1978 T-60 in mint condition. I,ve been playing over 20 years. This is hands down one of the best guitars I've ever owned. The playability and sounds out of this thing are amazing! I have a Gibson SG and American Fender tele, This T-60 has surpassed them and become my new Favorite guitar.Best part is I only paid $250.00 for it.Would have paid much more for this qwuality...
Why did they stop making them?

Congrats on the new T-60. You've got to come check out the T-60 forum now.

I wish I had a good answer why production was stopped. I'm guessing the whammy bar and Super Strat craze in the mid 80s had something to do with it.

I would say slow sales combined with a lack of pro-players using them killed the T series guitars.

I remember taking lessons in the early 80's at a store that was majorly Peavey. It appeared to be a harder sell for the Peavey guitars over the Fender and Gibson guitars at the time. The electronics and speakers sold well, but the guitars not as much.

Agreed. I didn't give a Peavey guitar a serious thought until I found my first T-60 in a pawn shop for under $100 in 2005. And I started playing in the late 70s. Always been a Peavey amp guy since I went electric in 1982.

Im Really happy with the T-60. Took an hour of messing with the tones to discover all the sounds I can get out of it. It plays amazing. Of course I like the Gibsons and Fenders too. I think Its a combination of bieng a Great player,Great vintage looks,Great tones and sustain, and you dont see them everyday. I've been playing for 20 years and feel like I just found an uderground secret with the T-60...lol.

I know the feeling. I was strictly a Les Paul guy for many years. My first T-60 changed that for sure.

I have a T26 that I bought new in 1982 when I went shopping for a strat. I remember the guy in the music store telling me it was just as good for half the price. I played them both and the T26 neck felt much better. Anyway I walked away with the guitar and case for $324.50. It is almost mint in it's case in the closet. I hardly ever play it. However, every time I break it out, I'm amazed at the playability and sound. I have a custom shop strat and the T26 is every bit as good, just different.
What are the differences between the T26 and the T60?

The T-26 is a 24-3/4" scale triple single pickup guitar. The T-60 is a 25-1/2" scale double humbucker guitar. The T-60 also sports a tone circuit that allows single coil operation between 7 and 10 on the tone controls.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm in the market for a T-15 and the price is within my range but the non-stock bridge kills it for me.

In 1979 when I bought my first guitar at age 15, a 1978 T-60, this is the mood I recall at the time.

I was actually looking for a Rickenbacker. But, at 15 I did not have $1000 to drop on just a guitar! (The $1000 then was similar to $2000 or more now.) I started looking for something close to a RIC or something that looked "classy." I didn't want something everyone else had and I still don't. I guess that's one of the reasons I am a Rickenbacker fan. I ran into the T-60 at a local shop in Illinois (no longer in business). They were a big promoter of Peavey equipment at the time.

The dealer I bought it from had a hard time pitching the guitar because it was not "handmade" like the Gibson's and Fenders at the time. And, because the price was so low, everybody thought it was a cheap guitar, like everything else of similar cost. I remember thinking at the time that this guitar seemed very solid for being so cheap. I had no idea if it was a good guitar or not. I've got to say now that I was lucky I bought it. Now that I know the real differences in instruments, it's no wonder I stuck with it and kept playing. I started on a fantastic guitar!

Now, the whole CNC thing is common place and by some considered "better" because of accuracy and consistency between individual instruments. I'm a huge Rickenbacker fan and they are all milled with CNC machines now.

Ironically, it didn't take long for similarly made guitars manufactured outside of the states to begin to appear and become acceptable and priced similarly to the T-60s. Heck, now you've got Squiers out there for a bit over $100.

Why the T-60 died I don't know, maybe the weight as that's the biggest complaint I've seen/heard about it. What a bunch of wimps! I love a heavy guitar and I am personally fed up with this whole weight reduction thing. I want an axe with some meat on it!

All I know is a loved my T-60 and regret selling it--even if it was because it was my first guitar.

I just bought this 1982 to replace it though...

This one actually cost me more now then I paid for my plain ol' natural finished one in 78! It's in great shape with a few minor dinks, but she's almost 30 years old and has been played so I expect that.

She's still gorgeous though isn't she?

That's a beauty for sure. I kind of stumbled onto my T 60 a few months ago. It had been hanging behind the counter at my local music store for about a month and I had glanced at it a time or two but even from a few feet away could see some pretty obvious battle scars and such so never gave it much thought . Then they ran a special on it through their face book page and it was a pretty big mark down so I decided to check it out. As soon as she handed it to me the scars and wear points really stood out and I almost handed it right back to her but decided to plug it in just for the heck of it. Five minutes later I knew it was going home with me and it did. That was a few months ago and my other guitars have been collecting dust ever since. At the time I was kind of stalled out and having trouble with my practice and keeping myself motivated. But this guitar got me over that hump and I love it so much that I've been watching Ebay and Craigslist and making regular visits to the local pawn shops looking for another that is in a little better condition. Found plenty but none that I could afford right now. Also looking for a Falcon but they seem to be even harder to find. Having fun looking though!
