Peavey Wolfgang Special tremolo setup?

Post by andyk » Wed Feb 01, 2012 1:49 pm

Hi-
My new to me Wolfie Special tremolo refuses to stay in tune. I've read that the base of the tremolo needs to rest on the body flat, not at an angle. To make this happen, the action has to be the same for the high and low E strings. Most of the time, I like the low E to be slightly higher, to reduce buzzing on the frets.

Am I reading this wrong, or does Peavey advocate a flat action across the board?

String height Low E versus High E should not play a part adjusting tremolo.

Spring tension adjustments important to allow flat plate.

When the string height at the low E is higher than at the high E, the tremolo is higher on the low E side, causing the plate that rests on the body to be sloped, causing the trem plate to hit the body at the high E side first.

How does spring tension change this?

Owner's Manual available on Peavey website.

Remove rear cover.

Add 3rd spring.

Tighten wood screws into guitar body.

Tension pulls tremolo down onto guitar body.

Additional screws at bridge adjust up & down for string height.

EVH preferred tremolo plate flat on body for additional tone & sustain.

Looks like the question has not really been answered?

Here's my take. Yes the tremolo posts are going to be slightly different heights if you want low E a tad higher than high E. This will cause the issue you're seeing (bridge not laying parallel to the body). Spring tension won't change that. What you CAN do is buy FR saddle shims. Lay the bridge flat to the body but shim the low E saddle so it has more clearance to the fretboard. Problem solved
