Wood 'restoration' on a 1983 Foundation

Post by idiotcountry2 » Wed Aug 26, 2015 9:24 am

A very nice, and well loved 1983 Peavey Foundation came into my possession recently. It's a natural finish - serial number: 01653371

There are a few wear marks around the pickups, and a couple of holes on the back of the body. I'd like to do a little restoration and repair, but am not familiar enough with the wood and finish and best methods to use. Any suggestions?

I know the 1983 manual for the Foundation indicates that they are made from either maple (gloss finish) or southern ash (satin finish) - with both having "our polyester/urethane finish". Since mine is now a few years old, and the finish is a little worn-down, I honestly can't tell what is gloss, and what is satin!

The control cavity is a dark wood, while the outside of the body is light.

Any help would be appreciated!

From what I can see, and if it were me, I'd do a good cleaning followed by a good wipe down with guitar polish or furniture polish and let it rip. Maybe condition the fret-board with lemon oil too. Enjoy. 8)

That's the southern ash / satin finish. First clean thoroughly with a damp, lint free cloth (and soft bristle brush, if necessary), then polish with Johnson's Paste Floor Wax. Can't really see the holes in the back that you mentioned, which suggests that they're sufficiently small enough to fill with canned wood putty, pulped toothpicks, or a sawdust/epoxy combo (prior to the waxing, of course).

Congrats on your new acquisition!

Thanks for the info guys! The color variation in the control cavity versus the outer color had me a bit off.

The above photos don't show the holes in the back - see here, along with very similar holes in a Fender Precision bass - is this some sort of strap mounting, or buckle guard?

I've never seen holes like those in Peavey nor Fender. Not a place for strap pins. Plus, unless it's a reissue of some sort, '56 Precissions were not string thru like that one shown. Like I said before, do the things I said, then rock it for what it is.

Does anyone know if the grain will look as good as this I know no wood is the same but I'm curious to see if anyone has a natural maple foundation with maple neck/fret board

Poplar was used in many solid colour Peaveys, certainly the Furys so it may well be a poplar body you have.

Or a fury pick guard any ideas
