restoring T-40/T-60

Post by patriotpv » Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:58 am

I have been the happy owner of a T-40 for some time---- and today a T-60 will enter the stable.

Can anyone suggest a good polish/cleaner that can get the years of grime and such off while adding oils or preservatives to condition the wood?

These things are in great shape overall --- but seem like they could use a little face lift.....I am not certain I want to go the strip everything off sand and totally refinish route ----I might--- but I would prefer to find a way to clean and condition without having to dismantle something that has held together for almost 40 years.

Thank you for any assistance.

Maple is an almost non-porous wood so any oil you use will just lie on the surface. They lacquer maple just to keep dirt off.
Lemon oil will clean it up. If your T-60 had the rosewood board upgrade option you're good with the lemon oil.

Frets are easy to polish up using green Scotch Brite, just put tape either side of the frets.

For the body again the lemon oil will do,the lemon part is really just a scent they add but it's mildly acidic so lifts grime.

Chip Todd, who designed the T-60, recommends good old-fashioned Johnson Paste Wax (yes, the kind of wax used on wood flooring) to polish Natural Finish T-60 bodies.

Paste Wax !!
The T-series came out in the 70's. Back then not even salesmen dreamed there'd be a market for pixie dust products like today.
It was a time for common sense solutions. Man I miss those days :D
