PEAVEY SP 2XT TROUBLE SHOOTING

Post by djprofekt » Thu Jan 06, 2011 11:44 am

Whats up, I recently purchased 2 used peavey sp 2xt cabs with a amp..

The issue i have is the "horn" part or the top speaker isnt working at all, the woofer seems to be fine..could this be a issue with the amp? Or do they make no sound when blown? Ive heard there is a "light bulb" which acts as a fuse in these somewhere but ive took the horn out and the rear part that you plug into and cant find it..any info or ways to test is greatly appriciated. Thanks

Hi djprofekt,

I can tell you that most probably the tweeter in that speaker is out. I don't think that there is a bulb in that model. Make sure that your amp matches the program power of the speaker. This may have been the issue as to why the sweeter is out.

Here is the manual for those speakers:

I wanted to also let you know that you should be able to just replace the diaphram of the tweeter and not the entire thing. Peavey parts should have that here on their site.

Thanks,
Ryan

cool, thanks...yea both speakers the horns are not working on so i thought it may be an amp problem...40$ is cheap enough to replace them if thats for sure the problem, is there any way i could tell for sure?

You would have to use a meter to determine that. Look up Simper fi on here and message him. He should be able to help you out a little more with determining that.

I believe those speakers really had a problem with their tweeters blowing. It may be an ongoing issue.

Thanks,
Ryan

If I may, it could just be a bad polyswitch. Do a forum search with these keywords to view the entire thread. rx22 driver gone on SP 2?

Good luck.

If both cabs have non-functioning high output drivers, there is probable reason to believe that they were over-driven simultaneously and went pffffft.

Visual inspection:
- check the crossover board for any dark brown or charred areas. (Uncle Tony's search should yield some pictures of my fried polyswitch)

Nasal inspection:
- smell the crossover board and see if you notice anything
- smell the back of the high freq drivers and see if they smell burnt

Electrical inspection w/VOM or MM:
- in Resistance mode, with the high freq drivers unhooked from the rest of the cabinet, see if you get a resistance of 5 to 6 ohms or so across the driver. If yes, than they might still be good.
- in Continuance mode, check the circuitry on the crossover to see if there is continuity from the where the signal goes into the board and where the high freq driver connects. If no continuity, then bad board. You can further isolate to the component level if you like, find the bad thingamabob and get a new one and solder it in if you are soldering gun qualified.

Too much fun!

i wish the pictures were still there so i could see what im looking for, but nothing on the board where you plug the jacks into smell or looks burnt (taking it that is the crossover board)...neither does the horn..is there any way it could just be the amp? or is there a hidden fuse it could be? and when i do a meter test on it, does the amp need to be plugged into the speakers? THANKS A LOT guys

The only thing worse than a thingamabob going pfffft is when 2 thingamabobs go pfffft at the same time.

At a "very" low level go into the Bi Amp High input jack on the crossover. This is a straight shot to the horn. If the horn doesn't work then, most likely the horn driver is blown. If the horn now works then the Bi Amp High switching jack may be bad. These jacks sometimes go bad.

I had 4 of these in a club a while back and could not stop the horns from going out. I don't think that it is the tweeter itself but something on the crossover in those models just isn't right. I took the crossover out and took it to a local repair guy who then replaced it with a different kind of Peavey crossover. IT WORKED!!! I love those model speakers because when they are working, they work good but it's just hard to keep the tweeter tweetin'.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hello, brand new member here, relatively new to electronics bring a drummer, but looks like a lot of great information here!

I have a good friend selling a pair of these speakers, and the crossovers are noticeably blown as he told me. Should I use the method described to check the speakers as well? I know the main speakers were replaced at some point.
