Almost complete...now need to upgrade Amp...for SP118's V2

Post by broki_beat » Mon Feb 13, 2017 10:14 am

Greetings again. I have submitted a few questions in the past regarding building/upgrading my mobile DJ setup.

I currently have the following:
1 Crown XLS 1500 (300w RMS/Channel) bridged to run 1 Peavey SP118v2 (the new type)
1 Crown XLS 402 (300w RMS/Channel) running my newly acquired Peavey Impulse 1012's - running on per channel

I purchased another SP118v2 which I will receive in a few days.

I am looking at purchasing a bigger amp to run the two SP118's...I am aware that my Impulse 1012's need more power...but right now the Crown XLS402 runs them at a good enough volume - so a bigger amp for them could wait.

I have options of getting a Crown XLS2500 (440w per channel @ 8 ohms) or Behringer (I know...) NU6000....to run the subs. I specifically chose these because I can get them at a good price locally.

I kindly ask for your opinion on what I should get for my subs....if among my choices...or other options.

This is for a mobile DJ system (150-250 folks)....any input would be awesome!

Thanks,

The Crown XLS2500 is spec'ed at 2400 watts into 4 ohms when bridged, and that should be plenty of power to run two SP118s. I think they are rated at 1200 watts each for "program" power handling. Don't know how the Behringer is rated, but if I have a choice between the two brands, I lean towards the Crown because of its reputation for reliability.

You are going to need a crossover with the SP 118. High pass @ 40hz 4th order (24 dB/octave LR) and low pass @ around 120hz 4th order (24 dB/octave LR). I would recomend a IPR2 5000 DSP as it has built in filters that you can set. The SP 118 does NOT come with a built in passive crossover.

Thanks Kenny, I do have a crossover and right now powering the SP118's with a Crown XLS402 (300 watts per channel)...just waiting for my new amp. I will tell you that I like the sound of my Impulse 1012's and my SP118's....it actually sounds cleaner and louder than when I had my SP2G's with my SP118's...

Just to provide an update on my setup. I just DJ'ed a gig for a Military Ball (600+ attendees) in a very large convention hall and used my Impulse 1012's and new SP118 v2's and the sound was awesome. Many were surprised on how small the setup was (almost inconspicuous) and how loud and clear it sounded. You can listen at the far end of the room with plenty of bass....and in the dance floor the sound was crisp and clean. I wanted a setup that was small enough to fit in my Ford Expedition and could support a gig of 150-250...this exceeds my expectations.
