12" Black Widow - Rehab

Post by netrecce » Sun Jul 16, 2017 1:50 am

The 12" Black Widow (1201-8) finally quit in one of my 1245 Floor Monitors (1980's).
Problem was simply deteriorated foam in the breather. Coil looked good.
Removed the magnate... and cleaned out foam debris.
Whoo Hoo! Another easy fix!

Is there any way to replace the foam? It is supposed to keep out the dust--right?

Colliedogboy1:
It appears the foam in the breather hole can be easily replaced once the magnate is removed. And yes, preventing dust and/or debris from getting sucked inside is it's purpose. In my case, I left it out because the 1245 Monitor is a sealed box with no ports and dust isn't an issue. After more than 30 years, it was still clean inside when I opened it up.

I don't know what kind of foam or adhesive Peavey used... or where to get it. On my own (with Rube Goldberg's guidance), I'd most likely sandwich together some foam from a Vacuum Cleaner product and use an Automotive grade adhesive.

I have used the filters for window unit air conditioners (available at wally world for example) cut to small squares and taped or glued them in place on the outside of the magnet...

I think that having the foam in there causes more problems than running the speaker without it.

I really like "Thunda's" solution.
Putting a filter outside the magnate. It will probably just fall away when something deteriorates... and be very easy to see and replace during routine maintenance.
