PV 1500 Noisy Fans fix

Post by JRoute101 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 1:48 pm

Hi all!

Just got a pair of gently used PV 1500's from a music store. I've heard the fan's on these were noisy, but wow!

Is there a fix or upgrade, or any other fan that can be swapped out with the stock fan that is quieter?

How can I quiet these down? My old PV-8.5C was so quiet.

Someone out there must have had to tackle this.

Thanks,

James

First I would try a little WD-40, a little oil can sometimes help.

I agree with Marty, and I will bet a little house keeping inside of it will do wonders,

I wonder if a little 3 in 1 oil might last longer or some of those sprays that dry to a dry lube might keep it from attracting more dirt?

I usually use Corrosion X, it is excellent. I will try that, but I did talk to a tech at Peavey and he acknowledged the noisy fan problem on that series.
He said a "bearings based" fan was developed for the version of the PV 900 that is used in the Rockola jukeboxes and said it will work in the 1500. He said it is quieter. Peavey Part No. 30904109 $29.99 (A 24v 80mm 40 CFM fan). I guess the original fans are not bearings based.

Any thoughts or am I being sold..

Remember that any lube you spray in there is going into a motor, not a mechanical thing. I'd stay away from anything like a solvent. WD would work fine, even a drop of Deoxit on the shaft will work most times. Most muffin fans have only a single axle hub, usually you peel off the round label to expose it.

Roller bearings are unusual in amps in my experience, usually just bushings are what you get. Roller bearings cost a little more, but worth it.

I do not advise using WD-40 as a lube! It is great for drying out ignition systems on cars & fair at busting rusty nuts & bolts loose but the lubericant properties of WD-40 last about 3 minutes. I met the guy who invented this product & he told me that WD stood for water displacment. I used to work in a bike shop & some clown brought in a $900.00 bicycle that he ruined every bearing by using WD40 on it He even ruined the chain by using the product on it. The WD-40 washed all the proper oil & grease out of every bearing on the bike. Just a word to the wise!

+1. Needs lube after application.

Hi. I'm resurrecting this old thread because I just switched on my new PV 900 for the first time and I'm shocked by how noisy it is. I would like to determine whether this fan noise is "normal" for the PV series or whether there is a defect.

Essentially, there are two fan-related noise coming from the unit: 1) normal hum of air flowing through the unit and 2) a noisy "rrrrrrrrrrrrr" as if the fan bearings are going.

Is noise #2 normal for the PV series???

I currently have 3 IPR 3000 top of the line from Peavey, I had the same issue of the noisy fans, what I did was take apart the fans a grease them with all purpose grease that I bought in Home Depot, you have to make sure you grease both bearings, each fan has 2 bearings and they are really small, don't use oil because you'll have the same noise, the noise on my system came down from 100% to 25%, it is a huge difference. I was going to post a video on YouTube how o do this but I figure no one was interested on this. Hope you guys do the same

Also you can use Lucas (Oil Stabilizer) it works almost better than grease and is easer to apply, let me know what you guys think ....
