Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
I got a 6500 to replace the powered mixer on my Stagepas 500. I'm using the Yamaha Stagepas 500 speakers which were designed for a 300w system. I figured since the 6500 is just a bit more powerful, I should be able to use the older speakers. When I turn everything on I do get sound for about five seconds through the spekaers then silence; no pops or feedback, just goes quiet. The lights on the 6500 indicate that the pods are still receiving signals even when there's no sound from the speakers. Shouldn't these spekaers work with this system at least as long as I don't crank the volume? Since this is happening out of the box I have no way of knowing whether it's the 6500 or the speakers at fault. Here are some basic specs on the speakers: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/live_sou ... gepas_500/
Any guidance would be appreciated. Would love to isolate the issue before I take the unit back to GuitarCenter or buy new speakers.
Thanks. K

Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Yes, you should be getting uninterrupted sound from the PVi6500 and your Yamaha speakers, especially if the speakers are performing well with the Stagepas 500. The speakers are 8-ohm speakers and a perfect match for the 6500. I think the specs on the 6500 and the Stagepas 500 indicate that the Yamaha actually has more power output than the 6500. Still, you should be getting substantial sound from the 6500. Are you sure you have everything connected correctly and the 6500 set up properly? It never hurts to re-read the manual.
Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
I've tried different settings, and have gotten a few seconds of sound out of the speakers. I'll try different cables with my mic and guitars to see if that's it, but the lights are going on every time I strum or speak.

I don't think this is a speaker issue. It is more likely a setup or cabling issue.
How do you have this all wired up? How do you have the amp controls set on the mixer? Pics would be dandy.

So one picture is the lights on the right jumping up as I sing into mic and another while I strum. I've sent links because I can't get my images into this reply.
I've tried each button in every possible way, ie. phantom power, nothing.
When I turn the system on the speakers make some feedback now and go quiet. Maybe there's some kind of feedback protection that's set too high?
Thanks. K

Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
How is the limiter set?
Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Thanks for asking. I don't see anything in the manual that says limiter. But all the buttons and switches have been tried in both positions.
Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
How are the speakers connected? Can you show us the back?
I presume you are running a single 1/4 inch SPEAKER cable from eack output jack to a single speaker, correct?

Yes. The two Yamaha Stagepas speakers using speaker cabling; each plugs seperately into the back.

Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Yeah, the most likely culprit is that the mixer has an issue and shuts down. Try other cables and speakers, but odds are that the mixer is broken.
Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Thanks, all! I took the mixer back to Guitar Center and they hooked up a single passive speaker and it played fine. They said the Yamaha speakers are not the correct ohm. So I need to find new speakers. What ohm do I need for the 6500? Thanks again. K
Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
My guess is, it is shutting down because the amp is seeing an impedance that is too low (something close to a short). This could be caused by the cables or the speakers.
Each amp can drive a 4 to 8 ohm speaker.

Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I never got my PA going and let things go. Recently, I bought a pair of Peavy speakers. They work great for up to two minutes and then the mixer stops sending to the speaker even though the indicator lights move up and down as the mic is used. This also happens with other audio feeds. Can one of you blackbelt gearheads tell me if the 6500 should have a problem with these Peavy speakers???

Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
The mixer should be able to drive those speakers without a problem. If you are absolutely sure the cables are good and you've tried it with a variety of speakers, then the next thing would be the mixer itself.
Re: Speaker issues with new 6500 powered mixer
Thanks, Jim. Before I begin the hassles of dealing with service, what speaker cables do you recommend? I'll go get them so I have everything eliminated. Best. K
