FX2 USB problem

Post by markpolkc » Thu Jun 05, 2014 6:46 pm

Installed our FX2 today. Everything went great until I tried to use the USB. I was able to plug in a thumb drive, make a test record, and play it back on the mixer. After that, nothing. The mixer says that there is no stick in the drive. I tried a different stick - nothing. I than tried to plug the mixer into a computer. The USB driver failed to install (Windows 7 32 bit system).

Now what?

Mark,

What version of the firmware do you have installed? is it the most current version? Not that it matters from a digital perspective but what board you have? 16fX2, 24FX2 or 32FX2? Also what brand of USB drive do you have and what size?

Make sure the USB drive is formatted properly before plugging into the mixer. FAT32 is a good start, or whichever the default is in Win7. Some USB drives have autorun software with a separate partition on it, mostly for file management and other small utilities one doesn't need. This software can cause issues with read/writing to the drive. The earlier versions of the firmware had some MINOR file naming and storage location issues that were corrected, but no issue during beta testing on read/write failures.

Let me know, I can take pictures, do videos on youtube etc. More than happy to Help. I'm happy to say that I was a small part in helping Jim to debug some of the features of the new FX2 digital section. If I can't answer your problems he is the next best guy who can. 8)

Hi Mark -

Did you ever resolve your issues? It seems very strange that on your first go you were able to record an MP3 and then play it back, but then the next time you used it, it wouldn't work. Was the USB drive unplugged during playback or record? It is possible to corrupt a drive if it is unplugged during reading or writing.

As for the USB streaming to/from a PC, you say the driver failed to install? This is even stranger. The FX2 is setup to be a normal audio device using the standard Windows audio drivers, so if the driver install failed, that could be a problem with your PC.

If you could give a little more information, I'm sure I or someone else on the forum can help sort it out.

the FX2 you need to go into the menus after you connect the memory drive to read from it. The FX first generation had an auto detect feature where it read the stick once you inserted it. This doesn't happen on the FX2 series.

The USB drive should be formatted before using it with the FX 2. Sometimes USB drives have a ghost CD partition with file management software that "autoruns" when first accessed, this could lock up the mixer and cause you to power cycle it. It is best to remove this CD partition if you plan to use it with the FX2 (even the first gen FX too) to avoid this issue.

Having a similar problem. FX2 - 20 channels. Software Ver 1.17a
USB stick is FAT32 formatted. Stick recognized, file directory correct.

Successfully setup to record, filename set, display shows that sound is being
recorded to the USB stick, amount of time recorded, time remaining, and
correct filename. There is many GB of empty available space on the stick.

Then hit stop (to stop recording). Wait a minute or two then remove USB stick.

About half the time the file just recorded is not there. The other half of the time it is
there and has proper contents.

Is there some specific sequence needed to stop the recording and assure that the
recorded file is closed and properly written to the USB stick before removing the stick?

Hi Tom99,

Not sure about your issue, but are you sure you have an FX 2 mixer? You mentioned you are running firmware version 1.17a, which doesn't exist for the FX2 mixer. The latest firmware for the FX2 mixer is version 1.13.

I looked at the console revision number today, it's 1.13
My mistake about 1.17 (ignore the wrong revision number please).

The console is the 24FX.

Tom99, touching base. Did you try formating the USB drive?

The USB stick is properly formatted FAT32, and the audio is being written to the USB stick. What appears to be happening is that the file is not being closed properly all the time.

If I stop the recording, wait for all activity to finish (led flashing on the stick) then remove the USB stick, the file does not appear more than half the time.

Instead, if I stop the recording, then back out of the USB menus to the beginning, then power down the console, the USB stick recording is always present and correct.

So just a wild guess - simply stopping the recording does not close the file on the USB stick properly all the time.

Tom, I'll refer back to Jim H or Scott on the procedure for USB writing. Im curious myself. I'm using an old 2GB sandisk U3 usb drive. I haven't tried with larger drives yet.

Scott or Jim, any thoughts?
