FX2 16 channel mixer

Post by carlos900 » Sat Apr 23, 2016 7:05 am

hi new to this, not a over tech head....

got 16fx2 mixer, all has been well, until last couple of gigs, we play classic rock, 5 vox, 2 guitars, bass, kick, snare 2 toms,

last week my kick and toms channels, in setting up i was struggling to get gain up on the channels, without a horrid cracking sound from the pa, changed cables and changed mics, same result...the mics are old and well used, so bought new one this week, gigged last nite with the same result, you have to really max out the gain to get them on the board, pull up the faders and the distorted cracking starts...

any ideas plz, in a non tech jargon plz...im a drummer

Did you try a different channel on the board?
What is your set up, are you running left and right outputs from the board? If you are using one output check the PAN control.

You may be running out of headroom in the summing bus or in the A/D converters.
Masters should be at 0 dB(unity gain). Channels should start at -10 dB.

You do the sound check for front of house (FOH) first, then monitors. You turn up the inputs until each channel is loud enough for the room. At this point if you hear distortion, you may have not enough rig for the gig.

I had the same problem loud cracked sound even wel unity gain is set. The problem is i think the AUX send which eat all your headroom. Even when i was in green i got red light of clipping. Its not that i had not enough gig i am running

4X EAW JFL210 800watt 8 ohm
2 x EAW MW12 monitor 500 watt 8 ohm
2 x Active Subs QSC

1x 4 channel AMP QSC PLD 4.5 1200 watt per channel 8 ohm
1x 2 channel Peavey CS4000

because of this problem i needed to buy a another mixer so have now X32 Producer and Wauw no problems whats so ever.

If it's making those noises, you are obviously clipping somewhere. The FX2 has just as much headroom as nearly every mixer on the market, but you must use proper gain structure (as with any mixer) or you will have problems.

How did you set your gain in your channels?

I would PFL my channels, play at expected volume, main meters should peak at 0 or just above. Channel and main faders should be at 0, to start. At that point, unless you are adding a bunch of gain (like in the digital EQ), you shouldn't be able to clip the mixer at all. Set your amp gains accordingly.

Is there anything else in the signal chain we need to know about?

But i am happy with full digital mixer x32 with 6 aux and more plugins and matrix sends even a digtial snake output extender. trully happy to bad that peavey dont have digital mixer fully
