CEQ280a and CEQ280Ra

Post by studiodtk5 » Mon Mar 16, 2015 5:57 pm

I have just recently purchased a set of the CEQ280a and CEQ280Ra. I plan to use thie setup in a stereo mode for my studio. I want to be able to switch between two presets for two different monitor speakers. As I go through the menus, it does not appear to be an easy switch between two EQ presets with this combination. As I read the manual for the CEQ280a it appears that two of the CEQ280a units may work easier for a stereo operation mode.

Does anyone know these units? Have suggestions?

Since I have notice lots of interst in this post…

I just received the manual. It appears the system can be setup into a stereo mode with two 280a's or a 280a and a 280Ra.

I have not done it yet. I will report back when I do.

Darren, I was watching this post just to see what info I could pick up. I have one 280A which I bought cheap on eBay, but I'm not familiar with its operation yet. I downloaded the manual and consulted it a few times while I tried to run the RTA feature and a couple of manual EQ sets. I set up inside my big shop and gave it a go. My RTA effort didn't seem to turn out well--everything sounded funky. I tried another feature, kind of like a feedback ferret, that (I think) lets you set the room EQ using your actual performance mics (similar to the XR1220 mixer) and that sounded pretty darned good. It only took a couple of seconds, too. So far, I haven't had the nerve to use it during a live show. I go back to my 31-band analog eqs for those.
As far as changing EQ settings between different shows and/or different speakers, it isn't supposed to be that difficult. You go through the "recall" procedure and find the name and number of the program (setting) you want to recall, then hit the "recall" button again and there it is, instantly.
That little procedure shouldn't take more than 15 seconds, best I remember. Then again, as they say, "When in doubt, read the manual."
That's what I plan to do when the weather gets a little nicer.
I will keep watching this post for more and better info.

Looks like it is just you and I messing with these old things right now.

I currently have an AB International EQ231 tuning my studio as best I can. I used a noise generating source and an Audio Toolbox Plus to set the EQ.

I wanted to use the CEQ system so I could tune two sets of speakers and switch between them fairly easy. We will see how that works. If it is too cumbersome, I will not do it.

I will post back after I put the units in the system.

Whilst I do not recall the details immediately offhand, I do know that you can set up the units to recall presets by sending MIDI commands to them. The only downside to this is that you need a MIDI controller of some kind to send the command. However, once you have that, recalling a different preset in both units at the same time is a simple press of the button.

At one point and time Peavey made a 1RU box with 8 buttons on the front that did exactly this MIDI control function. I know I installed a few in schools where they wanted to be able to reconfigure the sound system with the press of a button. We used a few of the CEX-4la and CEQ-28r devices in these kind of systems. We used the 1RU MIDI controller box to change presets to turn zones on and off and modify the EQ of the zones to compensate for what groups of loudspeakers were on at a given time. It was a pretty fancy setup for being back in the early 1990's. Today that kind of thing is just expected.

Josh,

I was not aware of the switch box. That is pretty fancy. I will have to look for that thing.

The MIDI control from the early 90's was something amazing during its time. But I was always a bit confused in the MIDI programming. Now I think it is much easier to do that stuff. It took that stuff to get us here.

I I would prefer the new stuff for control flexibility, but I wanted a complete analog signal path.

A-ha! I have found it!

The 1RU box I mentioned above is called the Peavey SC-8 MIDI System Control Interface.

Apparently I forgot all about it having connections for external hard button switches and LED indicators. It was a very handy device to have on hand, for sure!

That is very cool. Makes sense to have that thing back in the day using all MIDI control functions.

I bet it would be a hard device to find. Most people taking those out probably just throw them in the dumpster. Don't need them with the new digital processor/control systems.

Would the Peavey AMR MIDI Director also work for this function?

Sure, I don't see why it would not work for something like that. I think we used that for the same functions before the SC-8 was available.
