Peavey SM57?
Peavey SM57?
Does Peavey do a mic it considers equivalent to an SM57? Audix did the i5, what's Peavey's contender?

Re: Peavey SM57?
The PVM45ir is the current production model that closest matches to the SM57. Although I think it would be more closely match to a Beta 57.

I have found the PVM45 series to sound better than SM57. I do have to say even though it sounds better, at times I have selected the SM57 recording. This was because the SM57 tone fit better with the rest of the recording.
I highly recommend any of the PVM45s (PVM45, PVM45i, PVM45ir), they are all nice sounding microphones.
Also, there is the Architectual Acoustics versions of these microphones PPA-something.

Re: Peavey SM57?
Nothing to report yet, but someone made off with my SM57 and I picked up the PVM45ir to replace it. More to come.

Re: Peavey SM57?
I just recently picked up a Peavey DM-2. I was using this on a recording and comparing it to a Sennheiser e609 (black face version, not the silver face version). The DM-2 sounds good in this application.
I was using it on a guitar rig. Les Paul into Marshall JCM900 into a 1960 412 cabinet. The two microphones both captured the sonic character of the rig. The e609 is a bit darker sounding with these high end character. The DM-2 has better clarity while maintaining good body. While listening to the two microphones I found the best of all was using both microphones sounding the best in the recording.
All that being said the I have found the DM-2 to be a fine microphone. I would not hesitate using this microphone on a guitar cabinet at any time.
I add this as another alternative to the SM57.

Re: Peavey SM57?
I just bought the ones from guitar center instead, 3 for $50, and they've been great both live and for recording.

Best deal for instrument mics around.

Re: Peavey SM57?
Good to hear you found a good deal as well. I found a number of good deals on used Peavey equipment from Guitar Center.
And how do you like the mics compared to the SM57 or others?

Re: Peavey SM57?
Ah, the difference being these are nice, clean, new, un-spat upon mics (or at least they were when I bought them ). This deal has been around for quite a while, though you have to order them online, rather than just pick them up in-store, in-store you get one for $50.
They're great, I've been using them on drums, for mic'ing guitar cabs, even on my own vocals (I don't like ball-end mics) and they work great in the studio, I've dragged 'em out to live shows and used them, no problems, no feedback issues that you sometimes get with cheaper mics. I haven't A/B'd it directly with a '57, but it does the same job, goes in the same places, I don't bother whether it's a '57 or one of these, they seem interchangeable.
Sturdy enough to just drop in a bag of gear (pedals, cables, adaptors, etc.) for use, and have it come out the other end just fine.
Does the job, 3 for $50
