PM18S-- Mic help with popping

Post by Galloway » Mon Apr 25, 2016 6:21 pm

Hello all,
We where 'updating' the sound system at our church when we someone donated a 'new' (15 year old) amp/mixer, and speakers. As it turns out the new/old amp was worse than the old one we had. So I ended up patching together a system using a portable amp we had, (interestingly enough the ESCORT 3000) which got us through a couple weeks, but the fan bearing was starting to go out which is easily replaceable but I don't think its really good for a long term solution for us, So long story short I got a new amp, mixer & mic...

I got the Peavey PM18S for the podium which works great except when people go to use it they are so used to pulling the mic to 3" away from their mouths which creates an awful lot of clipping especially on the Ps and Bs. I have it adjusted for it to be about 1' away but there are louder and 'windier people' than me that make a lot of air and still make some popping.

So other than getting people used to the fact they don't need to be 3" away from the mic anymore, is there an adjustment on the mixer that can be made so that I get the same volume but without clipping? I researched a bit and found a thing called a pop filter, but its a bit unsightly to have on a podium.

The mixer I'm using is the Behringer Xenyx 802

I'm guessing to lower the mic gain for starters, would that alleviate all the popping problems? I cannot test the system until Wednesday/Thursday

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks

If the mixer has a high pass filter (low cut) on the channel, engage it.

That mic does need a windscreen (pop filter) when used as close proximity.

Did a screen filter not come with the mic?

The manual for the 802 indicates no low-cut filter, but the "Low" frequency knob on each channel is an 80Hz shelving filter that coincides happily with the solution to your problem. You can turn that knob counter-clockwise just enough to help reduce the "P" and "T" pops. I have read that the "P"s pop at around 60-80 Hz.
The foam wind screen that comes with the mic is usually enough to cure the popping. You may have to strongly impress your people to back off the mic a foot or so. Did I say "threaten" ? No, no, I meant "train". Yes, "train" them. :)

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies, so looks like I already had the low filter down pretty low but I turned it down to 0. And I can still get the pop if spitting into the mic but backing off the mic it works fine.
So last weekend had the mic set proper and it worked fine, but at the end someone goes and grabs it and brings it up close... So training will be needed. :D

I'm thinking I'll get a beefier wind filter might help more

We have a slightly different problem at our church.

When anyone steps up to the pulpit, the mic picks up any noise from touching the pulpit. I tried isolating the base mount with rubber grommets but it still does it.

Any help would be appreciated.
