T-40 Bass With No Serial / Prototype?
T-40 Bass With No Serial / Prototype?
I have a T-40 bass that I just picked up. The body is super heavy, the bridge and neck plate all say Peavey made in USA on it. But the neck says nothing on it. Anywhere. No Peavey T-40 logo. No serial. No markings if you take the neck off and look where it joins the body. I was wondering if anyone out there knew if this is an after-market neck, or possibly a prototype. It does have the plate under the neck and little round spot for neck adjusting screw to push against, so if it's an aftermarket neck it's a dead on copy. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Re: T-40 Bass With No Serial / Prototype?
the tuners and pickups are of the later style variety, bridge is correct as is pickguard. is the shellac/varnish gone from the headstock? should be glossy/shiney. maybe someone stripped the varnish and the logos with it?

Now that I look it does appear that the front and back of the headstock are not shiny, and appears that someone did a very good job sanding or removing the finish somehow, because there is shiny stuff on the back of the neck then it abruptly stops when it gets to the headstock.

Everything looks legit except the lack of markings on the front and the stamped serial number on the back. It looks like someone did some sanding to remove it all.

Odd to sand the back of the headstock. Not unbelievable to see the front of the headstock sanded with the name taken off.

Previous owner might have know it was stolen and wanted to get rid of the serial number.

Re: T-40 Bass With No Serial / Prototype?
i also have a T40 with no serial, but it has the original toaster style pickups, as from my understanding the prototypes have capital letters stamped on them
Frank Peavey has responded to my email and in the process of looking mine up, also my T 40 has corresponding letters on the neck and body stamped in purple ink, it is possible yours is a prototype also, but it has later model pickups
the prototypes were built 1975 to early 77 in a carport, This was told to my friend by Hartley Peavey,
And i would forget the negative thinkers that want to bash a guitar without having a serial number, I think its worth twice as much

Re: T-40 Bass With No Serial / Prototype?
I have a t40 with no logo on headstock?
Is this weird to you too?
Serial number is from 1981 but shouldn’t it have a logo?
It has a peavey t40 sticker on it.
Please help

Post a photo. It is easier to understand what you are asking.
Lots of people of the era would remove markings on Peavey gear. Thinking that others didn’t believe a serious musician would play a Peavey.
As if you could remove the Peavey name from a T40 and mistake that bass for a Fender or something….
