Peavey ValveKing VK112 for Acoustic?
Hey all! I was at a show over the weekend and one of the bands was running their acoustic guitar through a regular guitar amp (Fender FM65...) with a standard soundhole pickup. Didn't sound too bad. Now I'm curious to see how my guitar would sound ran the same way thru my ValveKing? Has anyone ever tried this? Is it okay to do that with a tube amp vs solidstate amp? Any info helps. Just like to get some feedback before I spend money a soundhole pickup.

If you like the clean tone of the amp, then it might work for you, but you need to try it and see. You know anyone with a wired acoustic you can play through your amp?

IME the VK112 makes a great acoustic amp, lots of clean headroom for most purposes and with Bright ON, very very sparkly. This is based on my experience using a piezo bridge pickup on my AE; I haven't tried it with a magnetic pickup on an acoustic. IMO if you're really after a good acoustic tone you should get a body transducer or under saddle setup; the further away from a microphone (and the more toward an electric guitar) you go, the less of the top's resonance you will hear.

Thanks for the replies! Sounds like it'll be an interesting experiment! BTW..65 SG, I replaced the 12AT7 PREAMP TUBE WITH a Ruby 12AT7 instead of the Electro-Harmonix tube and it seemed to help quite a bit! Thanks for your great info, both times!

Re: Peavey ValveKing VK112 for Acoustic?
When I had a valve king (head and 4x12) I played my Martin d15 with a K&K mini pickup through it...wasn't bad, but playing directly through the PA system sounded much better.
No longer have that guitar, but tried my Breedlove acoustic with a piezo pickup through my c50 and wasn't crazy about it...way too middy, though I was able to get it sounding ok with and eq pedal with the mids scooped. Played through the pa though it sounds great.
Basically I gave up on trying to get a good sound from a guitar amp and play direct through the pa when needed live...at home I don't really have a need to amp my acoustic, if I did I would probably try to pick up a small acoustic amp, keyboard amp, or powered pa speaker.
One other thing to try is playing through a bass amp...similar frequency to a keyboard amp...played my acoustic through a friends fender bass amp and that sounded really good.

Using a notch filter is a huge advantage when using a guitar amp for Acoustic. Some guitars come stock with them and any good Acoustic Preamp will have one. I use my processor for Acoustic and several different patches to give different voicings. You have to be very careful or it can get very tinty on you one way and low frequency buzz the other way. I also take a PA mic and drop it down to the hole for a double whammy effect and it works really nice.
