Help with Bandit 112 extention cab ideas

Post by ninjasword71 » Wed Jun 19, 2013 3:05 am

First off, I'm not young, I'm stubborn and like to build. I have a Bandit 112 silver stripe and want to build a cab for it. I would like a 4 speaker one or 3 if anyone has attempted it. I know the output is 100w but wouldn't that mean I need no more than 4-30w speakers? 4x30=120w correct? I try to think outside the box on the most part. Does it work to do a 3 speaker cab? I want to end with 8 ohms if possible. I don't gig right now but just want more volume. I am more confused with the series/parallel debate now that I checked it out online. Anyone have a proper wiring diagram or one for a 3 speaker system? Thanks for any help I can get

I believe your extension cab will be handling 50 watts and 50 watts on your amps internal speaker. Without the extension cab your amp puts out 80 watts. Your probably better off to build a 4x12 if you want to end up with 8 ohms. 4- 8ohm speakers wired in series/parallel. You need to wire 2 sets in paralell and then wire those set together in series to end up with 8ohms.

Thank you for the reply and a nice straight forward answer. Not brand, but what watt speakers are best for a 4x12 @ 50 watts? I don't want to under power them too much and don't want distortion when cranked. My amp or effects unit will handle that.

Choose whatever speakers you like that will handle the power output. There is no such thing as underpowering speakers. I've run 300 watt Marshall cabinets with 1 watt amps. I generally recommend 1.5 to 2 times the speaker power handling.

Simply put, 30wx4 would work too with great sound or should I shoot for 50w or higher? My reasoning is that 30wx4=120w which is 70w in the safe zone or is this wrong? I don't want to buy speakers with way too many watts if I don't need to. I understand that guitar speakers are different in that they have to handle squeals and thumping lows quickly.

Jensen mod 12/35s. They are reasonably priced and are really a great all around speaker.they also sound really good in the transtube bandits. There are more expensive speakers out there but that doesn't mean better. Wgs makes some nice makes some nice stuff I hear.

I built a 4x12 with the Mod 12-35 speakers and they do sound great. I've used them with a Peavey Windsor 100 watt head and a Mesa Heartbreaker 100 watt heat with good results. They have a lot of lows. They also have a lower spl (around 94 I think) so you can run the amp at a higher output before getting overly loud. Also the small magnets make for a light cab.

To build a 3x12 cab you would need two 8 ohm speakers and one 16 ohm speaker. I would make sure that the spl rating would be really close if mixing speakers so they will all have the same perceived sound level.

I made a custom baffle for my bandit . 3 jensen mod 8/20s all of which are 8ohms. I wired two in parallel making it 4ohms then wired the other 8ohm in series making it a total of 12ohms. The only problem I found was the single 8ohm was twice as loud as the two in parallel. So I wired a 8ohm 20watt resistor across the poles of the single 8 ohm speaker and it balanced it out.while the amp now sees an 8 ohm load and puts out 80watts only 60of those watts are being applied to the speakers.the other 20watts are going into the resistor. I only use it for home use. But it sounds amazing . Like a mini half stack. For an 8" speaker the jensen mods sound great.and very good bottom end not boomy at all . I suppose the size of the bandits cabinet has some thing to do with that :D

2 jensen mod 12/35 8ohm in parallel and one 12/35 4ohm (if they make it) in series adds up to 105 watt 8 ohm cab. But the single 4ohm may still be louder thand the two 8ohms in parallel. :(

80 watts @ 8 Ohms versus 100 watts @ 4 Ohms = Minimal additional volume

Adding Speakers = Push More Air

Peavey Cabs Available (Used).......

SX112 w/Sheffield 1230 (8) Ohm Speaker

XXL212 w/ Two Classic 1238 (8) Ohm Speakers -----> 16 Ohm Cab

Plus.......

Numerous Peavey 16 Ohm 412 Cabs

Solid State TransTube Bandit has zero problems driving 8 Ohm on-board speaker AND 16 Ohm Extension Cab

Solid State = Tolerant

Tube Amps = NOT Tolerant

Just wanted to chime in about speakers. I have a Peavey Bandit "silver stripe" combo amp that had a good Sheffield speaker (12"). But I use a Line 6 Pod HD500X and made for guitar speakers have their own midrange variances that gives each guitar speaker its individual tone. The Pod likes PA speakers best to accurately model the amps and effects it contains. The secret weapon is an Eminence Delta Pro 12A cast frame speaker with 400 watts RMS power handling and 800 watts max power, with a sensitivity rating of 99.2 dB 1W/1m. There were some reviews there where people loved them for bass cabs and guitar cabs, one guy put 4 of them into a Marshall 4-12 cab and he said it blasted out good tone so I decided to try one out. The beast does weigh 18 lbs though and cost $130 (from Parts Express) more than twice what I paid for the Peavey!!! But, that little amp can go VERY loud with this setup or still sound perfect at low volumes (models clean, crunch, high-gain, effects, etc at any volume quite nicely actually) I think it sounds better just going directly int the amp with my guitar than with the Sheffield also, plus you will never blow the speaker. Don't tell the Pod users or these cheap to buy amps (not cheaply made though, they are built to last) or they will be all snatched up! Line 6 has some very expensive PA type guitar cabs to use with the HD units but I think I get even better tone through the Peavey at a fraction of the price. Although it's heavier now I can still easily lug it to practice unlike my Carvin V3 100 watt tube combo that weighs over 80 pounds and is bigger (2x12"). Couldn't lift the Carvin into my car trunk but the Peavey is a breeze and is quite compact.
