RBN speakers

Post by Mark Oliver » Wed Mar 16, 2016 8:29 pm

It is great to see this product line available. It appears to be above the SP/Impulse line in cost but below the Elements, QW and Verse Array products.

I am looking forward to seeing the performance specs for coverage and output especially for the 12's.

I will be buying two of the RBN 12;s and one RBN 215 Sub. I heard them at NAMM.

Before I ever got around to replacing my Impulse 1015's with EU 112's, they were discontinued. I am hoping that the RBN 12's will be a good pairing with my EU 218 subs. Opinions welcome.

And what will you use them for, Marty? In other words, what roles can you see them filling?

The specs are still incomplete on the website, particularly the coverage area and SPL level. Got any of that info?

I do a couple of small community service gigs for the city, MLK Day, Veterans Day, etc. I will occasionally do a small band, thus the RBN 215 Sub. I also run a 4 Hang VR-112 system at the Meridian Temple theater for certain shows, I have some SP-4's in a local venue, and I service three clubs (Jackson, Indianola, and Clarksdale).

Funny, but one venue has a sound guy that I had gotten fired twice :? , but since they only pay $10.00 per hour, they can't get anyone with any sense to do the gig. He has failures quite often, and I decided to let them keep the retard, cause I made $3,000.00 last year fixing the results of his work. :D I would go there more often but it's a 4 1/2 hour drive. I stopped in a few months ago for lunch on my way back from St. Louis and the guy started setting up mics for that nights show. He plugs in mic 1, then mic 2, and when he plugs in mic 3, the system immediately breaks into feedback. Instead of immediately unplugging that mic, he takes his good ole time saunturing back to the console to shut down the mains on the mixer. Meanwhile about 40+ people having lunch are holding their ears. He only sets the mics up, does a quick sound check and spends the whole evening on Facebook. Couldn't mix his way thru a Betty Crocker Brownie recipe. He also leaves the console several times a night to go have a smoke. You do get what you pay for. Sorry, but I can't name the club to protect the innocent muso's.

I would be interested in this as well. More specifically if these could replace my (4x) SP3BX

Hell-o The rbn's have massive clarity. compliments of the ribbon. I think they will have the vocal definition that folks use the sp3 for . I would pair them with the rbn sub only though. with a rbn set you would probally process with the sub high out to top box. good dsp settings in both top and sub. and o-yea the rbn subs are FULL power down to like 36 hz. they're a very good sub choice up till you would need vr type output.

Thanks for the info. Vocal clarity is definitely why i use sp3bx's, biamped.

The spec sheet on the sp3bx says peak spl for the mid/high driver is 126db. Spec sheet on the RBN112 says peak spl is 130db, it doesnt specify for the high driver however.

That'd be stellar if i could lighten the trailer and make getting the cabs up over subs easier.

May end up buying one RBN112 and running it on one side and an sp3 on the other over SP218BX's, to test volume/clarity/coverage...

Would be cool if someone that had experience with both cabs could chime in

Full Disclosure: I've not heard the RBN in person. I have, however, worked with it's predecessor, the Impulse version sold a few years ago.

If the RBN is anything like it's predecessor, you'll love vocals out of it. Where it might fall short compared to the SP3 is at distance. The ribbon on the RBN is a lot wider in it's dispersion than the SP3's horn. In your typical bar this won't be a problem, but if you do a lot of outdoor gigs where you need the reach, you might consider sticking with the compression driver.

Thank you very much josjor! Well that's good news that at close distance the rbn112 should work as a replacement for my sp3's. maybe I'll go with a set of rbn112's for indoors and a pair or two of the sp2v2 for outside...

I am a pro audio specialist at a large retail music store.i have access to just about every Sound Reinforcement Speaker Enclosure( passive and powered )
in existence. Even Meyer Sound enclosures are available to me.So what I have to say about the Peavey RBN112 comes from thousands of hours in experience.
They are truly dangerous. You can push them to DB levels that will permanently damage your hearing and NEVER not for one second, feel uncomfortable, hear any distortion,or suffer any fatigue.i'll continue this post with more details later as I am in transit.

That's good news, mrchazmar10. I have been under the impression that ribbon drivers could not deliver a lot of SPL without blowing. I have heard them before at normal levels, and the natural sound they deliver is a beautiful thing. Glad to know they have found a way to beef them up so that they can play louder.
