3120 sounds compressed

Post by xntrick » Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:14 pm

I've had this amp for about 5 years now but lately it sounds compressed to me with a small sound. I use WG ET65 speakers, kt88 power tubes and the following pre-amp tubes:

V1: JJ ECC81
V2: Tungsol 12AX7
V3: Tungsol 12AX7
V4: JJ ECC81

I'm not sure if it's possible to improve the sound but I figured I'd ask.

I saw a youtube video with Satriani using a JSX and I just love that hard rock tone he was getting. I'd luv to be able to trade for one but no such luck so far.

The JSX/TRIPLE XXX II has a lot more disparity between the Crunch and Ultra channels. It took me 10 or so years to come around, mostly for fear of losing the Triple XXX/3120 cleans, however I now think the JSX is the better amp.

For 5 years and the tone has gone away, I would be inclined to try some new power tubes before giving up on an amp.
